from the n.c. history project:

The original Indians to inhabit present-day Robeson continue to live in the area. According to William S. Powell, the Lumbee, with over 53,000 registered members, comprise North Carolina’s largest tribe, and the ninth largest in the United States. Some historians believe the Lumbee were the descendants of the “Lost Colony” colonists who intermarried with the Croatan and moved to present Robeson County in 1650. The Lumbee adapted to the white settler’s lifestyle and assimilated into the new culture.

It seems likely that some, if not all, of the colonists went to live among the native peoples of the Outer Banks. John White believed that they had gone to live with the Hatteras (Croatan) Indians under Manteo. Many Lumbee now living in Robeson County believe that they are descended in part from the Roanoke colonists and the Hatteras Indians. They cite their light complexions, blue eyes, and names that are the same as the names of the Roanoke colonists. Some historians and anthropologists agree that this is likely true, but there is no hard evidence. Some attempts are now being planned to use DNA testing to determine whether the Lumbee are, in fact, descended from the Lost Colonists.

Well D not all lumbee Indians are blonde hair blue eyed as so claim. Some are but most are dark skin. I lived just north there for a few years and employed close to 100 lumbee Indians. Most are named Locklear or Oxendine.
