Some of you may be surprised to know about the “other” fight song that ends with the shouting of M..A..R..S..H..A..L..L! by the crowd.
“Show me an Irishman who doesn’t love a thistle, show me an Englishman who doesn’t love a rose, show me a true heart, a son of dear old Marshall, who doesn’t love to win?”
After the shouting of the letters, the last line “Fight, fight for dear old Marshall U!”
And the band finishes with the tubas playing a single note.....
Now, I find it interesting that it says “U” at the end, which tells me that this fight song was written for the band and fans after 1961, when we received University status.
The other fight song “Sons of Marshall” was already in use before 1961. I know this because the third line in it (original: “Year after year we go to Marshall college, having lots of fun and gaining lots of knowledge” had to be altered after ‘61:
“Year after year we go to Marshall U, having lots of fun and gaining knowledge too”
Just some bye week thoughts....I love how the soccer fans are able to sing their fight songs word for word. Sounds very cool when 40k belt it out in unison! Wish we could get there.
