Marshall Basketball's One Shining Moment

I felt all along than Danny & his staff would get THE HERD to the Dance in less than 5 years!

I hope you naysayers are eating a lot of "stuff" now that doubted his recruiting (304), coaching style (created for the first time by his father, Louis.....Hall of Fame in both WV & Ohio), placing academics before wins, choosing class student athletes/model citizens to wear a Marshall jersey. He "did it his way"...and by golly it is working. If you recall...he ran off the two returning scorers (over 47 point/game) in year one---because they wanted to "do it their way."

It's definitely smart to get rid of poison even if they are good players. If you don't have guys that buy into what you are doing, it doesn't matter how good of a coach you are.

Very cool... A lot to be proud of in the basketball program.

On a side note – Man is Villanova good. They just rolled through an NCAA tournament like few teams in college basketball history. Jay Wright doesn't get mentioned along with Kryzewski, Izzo, Roy Williams, etc. but he probably should.

Their run over the last five years has been absurd. I believe they're 165-21.

Right now Wright is as good as any coach in CBB, IMHO.
Jay Wright is winning with more substance than style and is doing it better than anybody in college basketball right now.

A lot of talk about Jay Wright being attractive to NBA teams.

JW is at the top of his game, we haven’t seen a tourney run like this since 2001 Duke as Nova won six games by double figures.

Last ten years:
-Duke 2
-Nova 2
-YouCon 2
-Cheats 2 ( one should be vacated and the other year they should have been banned from the tournament)
-2013 vacated
-Ky 1

Parity is overblown.

I get why any coach in any other sport would want to be in the pros. But not basketball. College basketball is centered on coaching. Pro basketball is centered on the players, and past that on flash and style over actual strategy.

As to Villanova, best team this year. Solid. But this was a way down year, probably the worst year in terms of over-all talent among all the teams of the one-and-done era. UK, UNC, and Duke never really got everybody on the same page. Louisville was taken out by its crookedness. Virginia stepped on its own d*** against a 16 seed. Purdue, had the kid break his arm. Arizona went out too early, also seamingly in the FBI's net. The rest of the SEC, besides UK; and the rest of the ACC besides UNC and Duke were really over rated.

Which is not to say Villanova is not a great team. They are. Just not an all time great team like some of the talking heads are saying.

Thanks for confirming the list. You have them all including the stripper school and the chapel hill plantation. ;)

The second part is of course not accurate. Wendell Carter’s mom’s lunch has been vetted and theyre no issues what so ever. Don’t know where the other schools stand.

I don't have a dog in the hunt, I just root for Marshall, and we don't cheat, so we barely make the tourney twice a century.

Look out world, 2058-59 Herd basketball is on its way!

I can go for that. Don’t believe it will take 30 years to get back, I’m optimistic.

I’m hopeful MU bb has achieved without breaking rules as the other high achieving D1 Marshall teams fractured the rule book . I would be sorely disappointed in DD if anything ever came up. This was a fun and successful team.

Ehhh...you can argue either way. Depends on where you’re at and what you’ve got. People say that stuff about the NBA, but most people don’t watch it or understand what they’re watching. The way Marshall plays and the way Villanova plays looks foreign to a lot of people in the college basketball world, but that’s NBA basketball on a nightly basis. Don’t think terry Stotts is doing a damn good job in Portland? What about Dwayne Casey in Toronto? You think they’re about flash? Mike Malone is doing a solid job in Denver—no flash. Rick Carlisle is one of the best coaches in basketball, but the Mavs have gotten old and made some terrible free agent signings. Tom Thibideaux is old school and won’t win a title until he evolves, but is a damn good coach—no flash. Brett Brown in Philly finally has something to work with and is doing a nice job with that roster & Budenholzer was an up & coming coach before Atlanta let their roster go to shit—both of those guys come from the Popovich tree, no flash. And that’s not even getting into Steve Kerr, Greg Popovich, Mike D’Antoni, or Brad Stevens. Don’t think the guys I just mentioned coach? Think they just allow their guys to play with flash & no substance? Please.

Id have serious reservations about going to the NBA, but it’s not because you can’t coach the players. Houston fired Kevin McHale, hired Mike D’Antoni, ran Dwight Howard out of town, signed a bunch of shooters & guys who can play multiple positions, and set the league on fire. The only way I’d go to the NBA is if I trusted the owner/GM I was going to work for. The great advantage about college is it’s YOUR program. You shop for the groceries and get to cook the meal. In the NBA, the groceries are given to you and you’ve got to cook the best thing you can with what you’ve got. Mike is working in Houston because Daryl Morrey gets it. The problem for coaches in the NBA isn’t the players being uncoachable, it’s executives not understanding how to build a roster for the coach they’ve got.

I really like your assessment, very nice.

Kentucky lost in OT To arizona in 97. They won it all in 96 and 98. Almost topping your list with 3 straight. You lined Sam out about duke then vacated Kentucky's title in 2013? I know bam got money from an agent and Knox got dinner paid for but not in 2013. You are pulling a Sam. Your hatred and jealousy is why. I can't understand that. Your one and done talk halted since duke NOW is number one in that department and good for them. Even I am talking as if Kentucky got in trouble over this fib investigation and nobody has been charged. Be careful duke has landed the best of the best the last 3 years. Will people still cry if the cats win a title with juniors and seniors. Why so much hate brother. You getting too old. You will stroke out and I'm sure your family would think their worlds ended.

Did Ky win in 2013?

I just thought that because of .-1. 2013 meant Kentucky would have to vacate that because of these investigations. You never say or mean anything good when talking about Kentucky so I. Well . Am quick to think with no thought. Up until Villanova's coach did what he did this year cal had won more games at Kentucky since he arrived at Kentucky than any D 1 team in America. Villanova has won more than anyone in the last 5 years. Calipari has done better than Pitino did. Gillespie was a horrible coach but his drinking got worse from day 1 at Kentucky. You know he practiced them really hard on the day of a game. Banned ex players from having the open door policy they have always had. Hired him quickly because Tubby quit and went to Minnesota around this time of the year. Ignorant people think Kentucky fired him.

By the way wv was in that game with Villanova with 2 minutes to go.Missed shots and free throws was the reason for the 12 point loss instead of a 3 or 4 point loss.

That wasn’t a minus it was a hyphen. I gave them full credit for 2012. Now that you realize it was a hyphen go back and look at the post again.
