I could not care less about WVU and its insular, non-alumni, fanbase. That, sir, does not make me "inferior" to you or anyone else. I also follow sports on a national basis, and, as such, of course, understand what an insignificant speck WVU is in it. Which is among the reasons I refuse the suspension of disbelief that is required to ACTUALLY BELIEVE the idiocy one must believe to follow that program.
But I want to move on to this "I root for the state" nonsense.
I could not care less that WVU happens by accident of geography and the failure to take Little Round Top on the Second Day to be in West Virginia. The idea that I am supposed to have affinity for totally different people living 100s of miles away because our license plates match over people just across a river who are just like us, is stupid.
That's what's GREAT about America...(Trump is making GREAT AGAIN)...opinions are like assholes....WE ALL have one!
Silent Sam, I respect you for your well thought-out posts....but I have an opinion---just as you do!!! I was born a Mountaineer in Mt Hope, WV....as a small kid I cheered for Jerry West, Ronnie Retton, Willie Akers, Roger Blackwell, Dick Leftwich when they wore the Gold & Blue.
Not many HERD fans in southern WV when I was growing up. A few Mustangs (Mt Hope) attended Marshall...and when it came time for me to attend college...I made a GREAT decision for me...MARSHALL UNIV. I attended a lot of WVU football games after graduation from Marshall (1969-70) because at the time, The Herd football was dismal. We sat in old Mountaineer Field to watch the eers shut down Tony Dorsett (he never gained 100 yards in a game against WVU while performing for Pitt), 1973 Heisman winner--John Cappelletti break the eers hearts again. When I settled in Charlotte (1977) I even became a season ticket holder to UNC Tarheeel football (because I'm a huge sports fan) with some of my NC friends.
THEN THE HERD began making noise on the gridiron (beating Louisville as I listened to the radio returning to Charlotte from Chapel Hill one Saturday).....I decided I needed some HERD Saturdays in my life. We tailgated in old Pringle Field and attended games in Old Fairfeild---like I did as a student with my Kappa Alpha Order Frat brothers in the mid-60s.
...It was GOOD to return to my college roots!
Marshall opened THE JOAN in Sept. 7, 1991 [$30 million) against New Hampshire. I attended the contest with my high school son and daughter. We listened to The Drifters entertain before game time...IT WAS ELECTRIC in a shinny new Stadium in front of 38,000 screaming fans.
Going forward, I then became a season ticket holder to HERD football for many year$......making the trek up I-77 to I-64 to HUNTINGTON. I have enjoyed many victories at The JOAN (1992 & 1996 National Championships)...Marshall has a 140-25 overall record at Joan C Edwards stadium for a winning %
of .848, which is the HIGHEST WINNING % of any FBS team at its current home venue.
HOWEVER....I will never forget my Mountaineer roots and continue to support that school in Morgantown and wear her colors when not attired in HERD GREEN & WHITE! I support "anything good" about our beautiful Mountain State....."Mountaineers Always Free" is scripted on our beautiful FLAG.
