It's amazing to look back at those teams and how good we actually were and then compare them to our current teams. Go watch the KSTATE game. We matched up with them and took it to them.
Just look at the size on our OL. That's a Big XII we matched up with.
I may be wrong, but didn't we put up the most rushing yards on them that they'd given up to that point?
Remember the Tennessee and Georgia games. We should have beaten Tennessee and we gave UGA all they could handle for most of the game. Richt said after the game you could put SEC jerseys on our defense and couldn't tell the difference.
....and the short punt that put OSU at Mid field in the waning seconds. O'Connor could kick it mile but his accuracy was questionable.
Giving OSU those sideline routes with no timeouts was terrible too.....and the short punt that put OSU at Mid field in the waning seconds. O'Connor could kick it mile but his accuracy was questionable.
I can't discuss this game anymore...I just recently have been released from therapy over this tilt! Would/Should have been the biggest win in school history!Giving OSU those sideline routes with no timeouts was terrible too.
Competing is refreshing though. I can watch that video and I still get excited as hell when we were picking off that deep ball to Santonio Holmes and giving ourselves a chance to win. 3rd & 20 with Josh Davis on the bench and Stan Hill looks off the defense and hits Brad Bates on a corner route to the pylon to tie it. Stan Hill completing 7 passes on one drive early in the game to score our first TD.I can't discuss this game anymore...I just recently have been released from therapy over this tilt! I agree with what I perceive to be your larger point, namely that MU football has declined over the last several years. The UC game a downer, I left at halftime as it was obvious that the Bearcats could name the score in that mismatch. However, I also thought UC had a very nice team last season, legit bottom top 25 bunch! I have become very lukewarm towards retaining Doc much longer. If we play football this Fall, he needs to show us something!Competing is refreshing though. Go watch the beat down Cincinnati gave us on our home field if you really want something that requires therapy. It took Isaiah Green 5 possessions to complete 7 passes.
Yeah, they're very good team. I don't view it as a failure to lose to that team.I agree with what I perceive to be your larger point, namely that MU football has declined over the last several years. I watch that and don't see a team who's a lot more talented than we currently are. I see a team more technically sound and a game plan that kept a superior team on their heels. An offense with a good design to get AJ Hawk & Bobby Carpenter outside running down the quick passing game early instead of teeing off on obvious runs in obvious run down & distances, and a deceptive run game where we gained an advantage in numbers because we knew we couldn't block them 1-on-1. Just look at how badly they dominated us on that last possession when we ran it three straight times, just playing for OT. That's the difference between players. We allowed OSU to stop thinking and just play, and they blew our shit up because we didn't have the horses to block them. Pruett and the coaching staff knew that though. We took away their strength and found a way to hang around.
In those big games like that, that is what Appalachian State does. Just sound football. Be deceptive, execute, and make them think. Paralysis by analysis. Hang around, hang around, hang around, and before you know it you've got a team who doesn't belong on the field in a dog fight. The 2010 wvu game, 2011 So Miss, 2012 ECU, 2013 VT/Maryland, 2015 Purdue, & the first half of the 2017 NC State games are the ones I remember under Doc where I thought we were outmatched and we were very well prepared, similarly to the 2004 OSU game.
Southern Miss was legit in 2011. We won that game because of our punter & Vinny Curry. Great execution and a good game plan to keep Larry Fedora's offense in check. They finished the season Top 20. They beat #7 Houston (Kevin Sumlin/Kliff Kingsbury) in the CUSA Championship game by 3 TDs. We went 6-6.We were not outmatched by Maryland in 2013. Nor were we outmatched in 2011 by Southern Miss (we had Vinny Curry. They couldn’t block him, evened out all other deficiencies). We weren’t outmatched by ECU in 2012, either. I also disagree with 2015 Purdue, who was bigger than us up front but outside of that, not superior... roughly equal.
The others on your list I agree with.
I think the Pitt game this year will be a barometer of what to expect from a Doc led Marshall football team. As you mentioned, we need to at least be competitive in this contest. I'm also very curious to see what the attendance for this headlining game will be, should be a near sellout but I suspect it won't because some have already given up on Doc. Hamrick needs to be watching that as well as the final score!Yeah, they're very good team. I don't view it as a failure to lose to that team.
But we didn't compete. Didn't appear to be a bit prepared. I can accept losing hard fought games. I can't accept that performance.

ECU was a year ahead of us in 2012. Their offense was clicking with Lincoln Riley. They were 7-1 in conference, we couldn't get bowl eligibility. We slugged it out with them, took them to OT. Cato getting hurt & turnovers did us in.
Purdue & Maryland are P5. We're told we shouldn't expect to compete against those types. We beat them. That's why I included them. It's weak, I agree. Just trying to figure out which logic we should use & when.
I got you, I can easily remove 2012 ECU, Purdue, & Maryland from that list. When saying "outmatched" they were a stretch. I'd still keep 2011 So Miss in there though. That leaves us with:Also depends on one’s definition of “outmatched.” When I think outmatched, I think completely overwhelming difference. Rarely have we been outmatched by a conference opponent. Houston in 2011 comes to mind and yes, Southern Miss took it to them that year head to head.
Our 2012 team was frustrating because they could score on almost everyone and couldn’t stop anyone. They were a good enough unit to keep us competitive in nearly all the games we lost. You’re blaming the Cato injuries and turnovers for the ECU loss, but we scored 52 in regulation on the road and lost. We also beat ECU in 2011 and 2013, the latter by a lot, so I don’t see that as being overmatched in the middle in any way.
2007 ECU would be a better example. As good as 2008 Houston was, we were superior in the trenches and it showed that night, so although they were flashy good, they weren’t overwhelmingly better.
My point isn’t really to argue with you. Just that “overwhelm” means different levels of differential to different people.
Go Herd
don't forget, Doc as usual scared to go for two in OT on the road, chose to extend the game and lose in OT. much like MTSU and I think there are othersSouthern Miss was legit in 2011.
