Maj. Paul Dahlen ( National Guard) said Santiago deployed to Iraq in 2010 as part of the Puerto Rico National Guard, spending a year with an engineering battalion.
He joined the Alaska Army National Guard in November 2014,
Santiago was later given a general discharge from the Alaska Army National Guard in August of 2016 for unsatisfactory performance.
The FBI stated he was not on any watch list , no significant foreign travel , did not appear to be radicalized.
Relatives said he had a history of mental health problems and was receiving psychological treatment at his home in Alaska. One uncle stated Santiago had not been feeling well as of late. One of his aunts stated he would not return calls or messages she left and finally she lost track of where he was.
According to his brother, Bryan Santiago who lives in Puerto Rico , Santiago's girlfriend had recently called the family to alert them about the ongoing psychological treatment.
This may be more of a case of someone with a serious mental disorder completely loosing it and possibly not being fully aware of what he was doing at the time he opened fire. Then again this may have been very well pre-planned as no one at this time knows for sure.

FBI investigators questioned 26-year-old Esteban Santiago for hours, Special Agent in Charge George Piro said during a news conference. He said investigators were scouring the suspect's social media footprint and looking into where he'd traveled before.

I have NEVER heard of a true believer claiming they hear voices. They may claim to talk to God, or Allah, but then again so do a couple billion of us. We may find religious terrorism illogical, but in fact it is not when you view it as cosmic warfare of the true believer. Hearing voices, going to FBI saying you hear voices, nah that is not logical in the sense of terrorism.
