Matt Colburn

Here is an interview with Matt Colburn... He talks about the Louisville offer retraction, and also about how Marshall is one of 3 schools he is now looking at and the fact that we play Louisville in 2016... so it would be a chance for him to play against them... He comes across as a very level headed young man.

WLTX Matt Colburn Interview

The verbal communication skills of today's young people are pathetic (especially among athletes).

Agree. For a 17 year old I thought that he was effective in his communication.

He visited GA Southern on Sat and Wake on Sunday. He had told us last week he wanted to make a decision by today but there is a Bleacher Report article that says he'll make his decision known on Wed.

Well anything is possible. We just watched Simmons go full potato and pick Temple. Rumor is he is agreeing to JUCO if he has to to play there.

Georgia Southern, by far, lead the nation in rushing yards/game and rushing TDs. They were 9-3 last year, 8-0 in the Sun Belt.

Not a bad option.

You have to admit that Marshall has the disadvantage of having hosted a campus visit some seven months ago versus the fresh in the mind schmoozing that went on over the weekend in Statesboro and Winston-Salem. But we did make an offer and we acknowledged the availability of that scholarship to Colburn in the week just past. As a matter of act, we were the first to offer according to Matt last year.

So Matt is faced with going to a three-win Wake team with a 3-star signee named Rocky Reid on board who outranks Colburn or he can play some substantial minutes in 2016 after a redshirt year at Marshall or he can join the GA Southern backfield that had two excellent freshmen at running back last year - L.A Ramsby rushed for 691 yards (4.7 per carry) and Matt Brieda had a whopping 1485 yards (8.7 per pop). This backfield was second in the nation behind GA Tech in rushing when QB Kevin Ellison's 1096 yards and their many other RBs are added. To add insult to injury, 2015 signees include 3 more RB's to add the 11 currently on their roster. You would think they need linemen to block for all these backs.

He is coming to Marshall folks. You heard it here first.

You make some great points... and I hope you're right... But my gut tells me Wake Forest... It's the ACC, closer to home, probably gets to play against Louisville each year (as they are both on the Atlantic side of the ledger) and an interesting factor his current coach Tommy Knotts is a legendary North Carolina HS coach also coached for 2 years at Duke..

Unless he's a prop the P5 schools can offer recruits so much more now it's extremely difficult for any G5 to compete with even the lower P5 schools.

Like what? MU offers full cost of attendance, just like the P5 schools. In fact, because that cost is a federal calculation, Marshall actually offers more than a lot of P5 schools - such as WVU.

How are our odds of picking him up?

I have seen the kid quoted saying one of the reasons he picked Louisville in the first place was to play in the ACC and that was something he really wanted, so I would say Wake Forest is where he will probably end up. Unless, he has changed his preference on that.

Well - according to Bleacher Report we find out tomorrow:

It all worked out for Matt Colburn, and after only six days of hell. . . .

Colburn's faced an uncertain future because Petrino went back on his word. Simple as that. But in a lot of ways, Colburn lucked out. He visited Georgia Southern and Wake Forest over this past weekend, and he already had an offer from Marshall. Late Sunday night, he told Bleacher Report he had decided which school he would go to, but wouldn't announce anything until he signed and made it official on Wednesday

Thanks Mark, I was not aware of that.

GSU Fans are truly disappointed that Statesboro doesn't compare well to Winston-Salem. Their thread is up to 23 pages now.

The interesting part about Matt Colburn's choice will be finding room in a backfield with a 4-star frosh QB from the land of fruits and nuts along with a big power back from NC that Wake signed after his early commit to the Tennessee Vols. If Clawson coaches like Doc, both backs will play - but who knows or even cares?

You do realize that depth is also a major factor in his decision, and we have 4 pretty damn good Rbs that he would be competing with for PT. Pittman, Byrd, Davis, and Weems have every bit as much potential or more than Colburn. He probably made the right choice in picking Wake as he is an all-purpose back that will likely be used in equal measure to the powerback they landed.
