Message For the Doubters

This is intended for a lot of you on this board.

Great. I don't expect him to say anything else. However it is possible to be a diehard passionate Marshall fan and still be severely unhappy with how this season unfolded.

For some reason demanding more from this coaching staff equals jumping off the bandwagon.

And save me the loyalty stuff when the HC was entertaining the possibility of leaving town before he even completed a full season.

No need to explain yourself. If the shoe fits, wear it proudly.

can you screen shot these tweet things for people who don't do social media. I know I sm in the minority, but my job requires I stay neutral on political stuff and reading actively all that stupidity, on both sides would make me say something and end up getting in trouble because I pissed off some citizen and they complained. In my 2 years here seen 2 people fired over some social media BS and a few more with some difficulty.

It's a video.

You should still be able to pull it up and watch it without a twitter account.

Yep.

That is the break in the fan base right now.

Most understand that this team grossly and massively underperformed this year. Most understand that talk of some bight future based on hope, and NOTHING CONCRETE is childish. Most are already tired of the press conferences full of Amway meeting hype and NOTHING CONCRETE.

Then there is the childlike minority. All is well. The future is bright. Blah, blah, blah.

At the end of the day, you are what your record says you are.

I actually liked what Mollette said.... This is an outgoing senior who has bought into the culture... Remember last year their were rumors of team dissent.... There is no question Huff has a lot to learn and most should have expected it. Anybody, that has coached before, been successful will tell you that their first year was the toughest and caused lots of self evaluation.

I think next year will define Huff as a coach... One caveat though, is Cramsey.

We have 3 kinds of football fans at marshall:

1. Didn't want a change from previous year's program. More than happy to win 8-9 games a year and occasionally compete for a title. Ignore much of the malfeasance and incompetence going on behind the scenes, resulting in fan apathy, player arrests, locker room brawls, and lack of player trust & respect in their coach. Accepted this because the HC was a WVian, despite never being a real part of the community or working to build the fan base. Didn't care that the HC had nothing to say in a presser because they were content.

2. Desire a change from previous program for reasons mentioned in #1, but apparently unwilling to actually want the real change necessary to build the program differently because it might impact the 8-9 win season, in year 1-2. Supposedly didn't expect a title, but now question why one didn't arrive. Ignoring all they complained about in previous years and want fan apathy and lack of titles fixed NOW. Complains about the transparency the HC shares in the presser as empty words. Willing to chase any rumor that has the HC looking for a new job. I strongly suspect had the coach been a white dude, most of this type of fan would be just as supportive of a first year HC and accepting as fan #3.

3. Understands the mediocrity the program had fallen into. Understands that the rebuild of the program is not just intended for on the field records but organization wide. The processes and systems that have been used previously...are no longer relevant and have all been changed. Appreciates the HC explaining how the entire organization is changing moving forward. Recruiting is different, player development/education/management is a different expectation, and coach/players involvement in the community is different. Understands this was never going to be accomplished in under a year and are willing to give a new HC a couple of years to get it going before passing judgement.

Doc won 85 games in 11 seasons, that an average of a little over 7 games a year. We had a great season, solid seasons, losing seasons and 2016, the worst in 3 decades. We are a middle of the road program for the most part.
We need that buy in from everyone, fans included. I think Huff will get it done, he needs some pieces to complete the puzzle. Doc had Cato, Huff needs his Cato.

Nope.

The vast majority of MU fans have moved on from discussions of history.

The adult branch wants to discuss THIS coach, THIS year, and HIS future. Like all adult discussions, there will be disagreements, but disagreements about different takes on the actual facts.

The child branch is still Doc obsessed. So tied up in it they will believe anything they are told, as long as its “not Doc”. They thus excuse make about this miserable failed year, blame the players, and buy into EVIDENCE FREE theories about some future year being so very bright.

So how were we as a fan base expecting too much prior to this season, but now we accept mediocrity? Comparing the past staff and this staff isn't an issue. It provides a measuring stick on which to form an opinion on success or lack thereof. Many variables come into play - depending on how one wants to spin it.

So how were we as a fan base expecting too much prior to this season, but now we accept mediocrity?

I don’t know how one could have expected “too much”.

I don’t know that the child branch of the fan base “accepts” mediocrity as much as it enables mediocrity. When the child branch lets its fixation on a past coach so cloud its judgement that it refuses to discuss THIS coach, THIS year, and HIS future. To say, and actually believe, that this is some “rebuilding year” and all this “culture change” nonsense.

Rather than look at this miserable, failed, underperforming year.

And demand better.

You left off the 4th kind of football fan:

4. Aaron Perkins type fan. Delusions of grandeur, 15-0 EVERY year, still blames Bobby Pruett for current losses.

I for one support coach Huff and I hope all the negative Nancys who expected a league title and a top bowl game, don't run off coach Huff with your lack of support and encouragement for the players and staff.
The fans won't run off Huff. He's obviously going to do that on his own. No matter what happens, he is looking to leave. What coach would entertain leaving before he was here one year? This was always a stepping stone job for him. He has no intentions of staying. As soon as he gets a P5 offer, he's gone, no matter what it is. The timing wasn't right on Duke because he wasn't offered job! If not in the next couple of months, he will be gone in the next year. If you don't believe that, you're kidding yourself.

Not sure who you include in the "child branch" of the fan base. I liked Doc Holiday. I also agree with critics about his inability to do PR for the program. Huff has done remarkably well with community involvement and PR his first year. The jury is still out on his coaching abilities. I doubt any of us would want someone to call our first year's job performance a "miserable, failed, underperforming year." It would be unfair to say the least. Changing one person in a work environment changes the group dynamics considerably. We changed an entire coaching staff. Coach Huff will be evaluated by his supervisor, and he will, most likely, receive a passing grade. He will also receive feedback about expectations for improvement. If performance does not change for the better in future years, he would be subjected to removal, firing or reassignment. Let's call Huff's first year a probationary period. His performance would not warrant consideration of any of the above options. I doubt that "demanding better" will do anything except create a hostile work environment. How about we do our best to encourage, support, and expect improvement. That is an environment all of us would appreciate in our work settings. Coach Huff deserves the same. Let's support him and see what he can do!

Frankly, both coaches underperformed in my view.

As soon as he gets a P5 offer, he's gone, no matter what it is.

Not “as soon as” but “if”.

Right now, he is a first year coach who (unlike most first year coaches, who take over programs that are really bad) was handed a solid team and he put in a miserable, underperforming year. That doesn’t get P5 teams to make offers. Which is why he wasn’t offered, or seriously considered, for any jobs.

Put in two or three more such years and the chances of him ever getting such an offer decline yet more.

I don’t disagree that CH would take the first job he is offered. I just object to the blind faith that such a thing is bound to happen. His future is, like all coach’s futures, predicated upon results.

And so far, the results are mediocre, if not outright bad.

What political twitter posts are you talking about?

Observations after reading this thread:
*Sam belongs in the child branch.
*Sam likes nothing currently going on at Marshall, i.e., Huff no good. DD even worse.
*Doc 1st year - 5-7
Huff 1st year - 7-6
Advantage Huff
Future tbd.
*Sam should be on all future search committees.

His says “We will be back” in his video.... back to what? We haven’t been a championship program since Bob Was here... that was a long time ago... his only job on this team was to win championships.... and he didn’t.

Made a few edits for you. Stop claiming CUSA division "titles." It's embarrassing. The bowl games were Holliday's bread & butter. It was the only time of year he seemed to coach up our team. Even the anti-Doc'rs on here have always given him credit for this, but you will never admit the one glaring issue in regards to the large font item above.

He did a great job in the bowls, the last two being embarrassing though.

Winning a bowl game isn’t a championship.
And winning just your division means you can’t finish the job...

everyone’s job is to win THE TITLE “Conference Championships” not any less, your program will never grow unless you win the conference...

That's the nature of the coaching business. Get over it and it will be that way for coaches and players in the landscape of college football. I love the message here. Get on or get out. Negativity never follows with success. Be part of the solution, we have enough problems.

They could shift Legg or Trickett to OC, keep the same system and be fine. It’s Cramsey’s play calling that’s the issue, not so much the system. Jmo
Shifting Legg to OC would do no favors to the play calling.. Cato was A playmaker he had to extend just about every play bill Legg called, then we fired him. Then came Cramsey “BillLegg2.0”
