Go to their message board for football and click on "Beat Marshall". Some of their fans are as bad as some of ours in talking smack.

Neither fan base should be talking smack about this game. This should be a good game.

This match up has always been at most a one sided rivalry. Miami has a couple of geographic or conference affiliation rivals but Marshall isn't one of those rivals. We Marshall fans made it a rivalry in our minds due to 40-50 years of losing to Miami capped off by the 1971 66-6 game which frankly could have been 100-6 if Miami had desired that outcome. Marshall's second coming to the MAC offered up some compelling games but a true rivalry crosses thru all sports and decades of competition in those different sports. OSU/Mich, Duke/cheaters, etc. those are rivalries that are palpable whether it's football, basketball, baseball, or tennis.

Yep. I think the cultural differences between the two schools add a layer of animosity, too. Especially from our side.

Based on this, are there any teams that you would consider "true rivals" of Marshall?

I would say Ohio U comes the closest to meeting the definition of a rival, but even that rivalry seems to fall short if you consider a true rivalry to "cross all sports and decades".

Yea I don't agree with that definition. ECU is a rival. We have history and both fan bases have both for respect and animus for the other. Heck you can visit one of their boards randomly or when one of our games is on and they are trashing us.

Go to that Miami board and read their prediction thread. Look at how they refer to us. Look at how we refer to them.

I would contend that USM, while barely a decade old, is a rivalry.

For my money it's a rivalry when both fan bases are invested and have a passionate opinion one way or the other about the opponent.

If it's a team you play that you have little to no care outside of that given game being played it is not a rivalry.

You can't go back and watch that 2014 game vs ECU and tell me that isn't a rivalry. The 2011 installment. That rivalry got its sparked in that bowl when Byron led the comeback. Once we joined CUSA it got ramped up with each meeting.

There are three types of rivalries.

1. Geographic

2. Competitive

3. Historic

Both 1 and 2 if played long enough morph into number 3.

ECU really? We rarely play them. I dont consider that a rival at all. I live in NC ans foe the most part Marshall is not on their fans radar. ECU fans want to beat NC State when thry get a shot or UNC.

I dont consider it a rival at all.

Marshall really has no true rivals.

Agree with Herdman. ECU will always be "tied" to Marshall, but in no way do they consider us a "rival". That ship has long sailed.

sounds like ecu doesn't have rivals either....they don't play nc state every year or in all sports do they

We've hopped leagues so often, we haven't developed a long standing true rival.

yes. my favorite basketball game of the year is Auburn vs Alabama on the hardwood!

Get out of here... you can absolutely have a rivalry in one sport. In fact, most college rivalries are in only one sport.

Yes, it's been one sided that doesn't mean there is any less hate between the two sides. When a coach punches a fan and one set of fans believes the other side ran up the score on a team coming off of such a tragedy, then yes that is a rivalry.

This game is a rivalry game. Is it our biggest rival? No. Is it a team we should play every year? No. But it's a rivalry game.

When we were in the same conference as ECU there was something brewing there. I could feel the animosity from their fan base. It was palpable and real. Lots of kids from my hometown area in VA go to ECU (when they don't get in to their first, second or third choices) and they used to give me shit about Marshall all the time. I agree that has faded since they left for the AAC, though.

Will be interesting to see how our home-and-home with them in a few years is received.

The Ohio U. rivalry appeals to me the most. I really didn't appreciate the "Battle of the Bell" until I left Huntington. The trip up to Athens and following the Ohio River during the drive is exciting for me. I'm hoping when we play again in the near future both AD's can work out a long term contract. Fox Sports, CBS Sports or the mother ship will pick up the game and potentially pay big bucks. I believe we can sell the history and the significance of football and region to the aforementioned networks. The best part is that the games are pretty good.

If we had to classify a school or schools as a rival, I would say OU would top the list, both in history and proximity to each campus. After that, not sure. WKU could be our next big rival. But in rivalries, each school has to win a few times to brew the hate. LOL!

We should play OU in football and b'ball every year. jmo

A lot of flawed logic in your first sentence.

It's an interesting match, but I wouldn't call it a rivalry. We had more of a rivalry with Toledo and Ohio while in the MAC. Toledo simply because they ruled the west and we ruled the east, every time we played other than the moss years, it was a challenge. Ohio has a history with us. Miami, just a couple of games that get talked about. All of the MAC hated us and to some degree, some still do. I agree with Chris on ECU, the 2013 game I attended was definitely a rivalry atmosphere amongst the fans. UCF we just hated. USM was a friendly contest of two programs respecting each other. As a fan, moving into CUSA, ECU and USM was the draw for me, the rest I could have cared less about.

Marshall's primary rival is Ohio - they're on Marshall's doorstep, they have the same color scheme, the whole nine. Its basically WVU/Pitt, without the occasional stakes.

Unfortunately we don't play each other every year. That constitutes a rivalry- not just the occasional 2 and 2. Play every year.

The UCF rivalry was really something. I'd like to see some more of that one. Lots of good hate with each other.
An old rival I'd like to see become a regular again is Appy St. Now that they've moved up and have a pretty good team I could see a good matchup with the two former southern conference schools.

All the comments re: MU's lack of "rivals" can be easily made about the "mighty" Mountaineers as well. Our longest rivalry resulting from conference affiliation has been Ohio U, I am pretty sure. But we are no longer in the same conference. But when we do play the kitties, it is a rivalry game, complete with a trophy, a river bell.

Same thing with the EERS. They have "rivals" they use to be in the same conference with, like Pitt, Penn State, Syracuse. Heck, they were in two conferences with Virginia Tech, whom they haven't played in over a decade. But look at the hype and excitement surrounding their game tomorrow in Redskins Stadium. And, yes, they even have a trophy they will be competing for themed around coal, "Black Diamond".

WV has been in the Big 12 less years than MU has been in CUSA. Who is their biggest rival there? MU is relative close geographically to WKU, although that rivalry has been one sided on the field in the last couple of years. WVU's closest foe in the Big 12 is Iowa State, over 1000 miles away. How does that get their fans blood boiling?

Maybe WVU's fans are just a lot more passionate about EER football in general than MU's fans are about the Herd. Recent home beat downs where the foes score 60 points or better at will (WKU, Akron) can do that to a fan base, I guess.

The Eers have been losing season tix sales numbers the last 6-7 according to Caridi the other day.
They draw as a result of who they play.

OU, OSU, KSU, Texas, etc. makes for good home scedules every other year.
