Seems like a solid choice. Being from Mississippi certainly helps a person understand West Virginia. Seems like his field of study is the fusion of health care and engineering, and clearly the next step for MU, at the graduate level, is to build on the medical school towards serious hard science work.
Mississippi State seems like a well run place, cannot think of any major scandles or whatever.
No idea what the guy thinks about sports (which is not the most important thing in the world, best thing for a school president to do is have a good AD (and we have a GREAT AD) let him run things and smooze donors at games) but life at an SEC school is a good sign of somebody that gets it.

I thought I saw a quote from him saying something along the lines of athletics are the front porch of the university they can make a good first impression or something like that.
I remember seeing the same thing. He appears to understand that and I think his area of study should help us move forward in some areas. I look forward to seeing what he can do.
Good to see a Duke PhD. grad coming aboard. Gilbert received that earned doctorate from the planets number one biomedical engineering school, that helps me believe he has the intellectual chops to get the job done.
Athletics is to a university as a front porch is to a house. It is by no means the most important room in the house, but it is the most visible.
Evidently in the Q&A session he had with people last week he said that he didnt know much about sports. He said he would let the AD do his job and stay out of the way (paraphrasing). That's good news to me. Hopefully coming from an SEC school, he understands how important sports are to the alumni and will give Hamrick the resources he needs to continue to build on what he's started.
I am 100% ok with that response as long as he understands their place, with his other quote i get the feeling he does. And richmond are you coming down for the battle between your two alma maters?
As a student, I'm very pleased with this choice. I personally went to the Q&A / meet and greet with the potential candidates and President Gilbert was my favorite. I personally don't know much about his future plans for the university outside of what he's said to the media / students, but I feel as though this was a very strong choice and hopefully he can keep moving the university in a promising direction. I love this town and university, and think we can all agree that we'd love to see this man usher in a promising future for us. Go Herd.
Good to hear all these comments. New President has to be able to sell the University to all stakeholders: students, faculty and staff, alumni and fans of the U, general public in Huntington and Tri-State, and to the state population as a whole and to state government. Seems like he has the academic "chops" and background as a top administrator and educator at a major institution to prepare him for his role at MU. Being able to communicate successfully is key in student recruitment and retention, in plans to growing the university overall and in seeking the financial resources from both public and private entities to fuel such growth. I like the idea that he is willing to approach state government to increase support for higher ed rather than the continual cutting spiral for higher ed the state is in! Let's all try to support the new president and our school in the coming months and years in achieving their desired goals!
