Mountain West news

Not surprised. There is a group of, I must say equal to the WVU level of delusion, delusionals who have podcasts and YouTubes who have three contradictory theories. One being that Boise State and SDSU were joining the leftovers; the second, far crazier one being that the Pac 12 is going to collapse and the leftovers are going to merge with the cream of that; and the yet most crazy being that various Big 10 and, get this, SEC teams are “coming home”.

Sad really.

Reality, as everyone knows, is that this is probably the best of the mid-majors, most years, but certainly a mid-major conference. And one made up of teams that their geographically logical conferences rejected.

The rumors on a couple AAC boards is that they are now talking to Air Force, Army and UAB...

As for Marshall our next move, if we make one, will be into the SBC to get back under the ESPN umbrella along with probably three more teams (some combination of Liberty, ODU, Charlotte, So. Miss, Rice, UTSA)

Rhino - we could do a whole lot worse! Playing App these last 2 seasons reminded me that we have a great rivalry w/Yosef & company…

A lot of talk about them lately... Growing area, growing school, good TV market, etc
That's the thing. We know that markets don't necessarily deliver the goods. Been to S.A. many times and it's rare to see or read anything about UTSA. Same as Charlotte. But hey, if they want UTSA and Charlotte, they can have them.

Still hoping for a regional league for us. If not, the SB with us, USM, WKU and ODU joining would be awesome. jmo

Keep in mind that the CUSA TV revenue for 2020 was $440k per school. The SBC revenue was $250k

That will change once the shuffling is over. If we are left in a depleted CUSA after all the movement is done, that 250K to SB schools will look huge.

Its a mixed bag in terms of future impact a school may or may not have... Who would have thought 30 years ago UCF would be as huge a university as it is today? Same with Boise State and a few others... Charlotte, UTSA, FAU, etc will always have their names thrown around because of their geographic location and their market size (whether or not anyone cares about them in their market is of course another story).

And I will say this in defense of Charlotte... I've lived in Western North Carolina for a decade now and I have seen more Charlotte "stuff" (ads, bumper stickers, highlights on the news, etc) in the past year than ever before. Does that mean anything in terms of long-term viability on the football field? I don't know, but they are getting themselves out there more and more.

You mean to tell me the worst football league in the country also has the worst TV deal currently?... Color me shocked.

According to that link, moving to the SBC is at the very least a lateral move in terms of TV revenue.

C-USA needs to be pro-active and try to improve the quality of the league. Hard to do though, when the Commissioner of the league has to stay at home a bunch, doing laundry, cooking, and cleaning house.

I don't think CUSA and pro-active belong in the same sentence... Once the dominoes begin to fall CUSA is going to be even worse off than it is now. If it happens where UAB, Marshall, Southern Miss and 1-2 other teams all leave for the AAC or Sun Belt. You might as well kill off the rest of the league and just have them go independent (with the exception of La. Tech and Rice, who I would think would lobby to join the MWC).

Lets say for the sake of example...

UAB - AAC
Marshall - Sun Belt
Southern Miss - Sun Belt
Charlotte and/or ODU - Sun Belt
La. Tech - MWC
Rice - MWC

Where would CUSA go to regroup? I don't think it could/would... North Texas, UTSA, UTEP, FAU, FIU, MTSU, WKU would not be a compelling group for anyone to join and I don't see there being six teams in FCS that would want to "move up" into that league. If the MAC were willing/able to take WKU, MTSU then the death march would be complete.

CUSA is going to fold at some point. Bad league. Herd better served if they can somehow manage to join Sun Belt in my opinion. Not a whole lot better league from a financial standpoint, but from a perception standpoint, much better. You're right though, if Marshall, Southern Miss, Liberty, MT, La Tech, and WKU were to join Sun Belt, then CUSA is toast. Of course, those six are a pipe dream. Thinking Sun Belt needs to make a move before AAC beats them to the punch.

The MAC and the SBC, which is made up of schools that were I-AA last Thursday, are both far closer to “collapse” than CUSA.

The MAC is living off a TV contract signed in a bygone era, when “everybody” had cable or dish and thus “everybody” paid for ESPN. All those “cord cutters” mostly did what they did because of the high cost of sports. The TV deal runs out after the 26 season. They aren’t going to get a fifth of that $$ next time. And many MACer’s live gates could fit in two school buses.

The SBC, which produces all those ESPN+ games at its own expense and receives no $$ for them, has a lot of teams I’m not sure will be able to stick in I-A (to be fair the jury is still out on some in CUSA like ODU or UNCC). When the next economic downtown comes (which looks like sometime next month) and states start cutting budgets and a couple of SBC members, and maybe a couple in CUSA, go back down, a geographically logical eastern conference made up of the survivors makes sense.
