For the first time in NCAA history, a college football team will have its players wearing different helmets during the game based on the position they play.

And no, it's not the Oregon Ducks.

The Navy Midshipmen will be wearing special "Navy Fleet" uniforms for the Army-Navy game on Saturday, Dec. 12, in Philadelphia.

Although the uniforms look sharp, the new look is all about the helmets.

There will be a total of seven different hand-painted helmets worn by Midshipmen players during the game, representing "seven of the historic ships that make up the U.S. Naval Fleet." Each position group will be assigned a specific helmet that will pay tribute to one of the seven ships.

I had glanced at these earlier...didn't know about the specifics of each ship and position assignment.

AWESOME!

Yeah, I don't like any of the Navy's actual service uniforms, but there's no denying these are simply badass.

Great job Navy equipment managers and Under Armour.

I like them but are they legal? How can they have different helmets for different players (albeit mildly different from far away)? My question is along the lines of the meaning of "uniform" and I'd refer to the cat and the hat socks of the late 90s a handful of our players wore that are now (as I understand it) illegal.

I mean could we use big Ms for lineman, stampeding Bison for RBs, a loan buffalo for....etc etc? I don't think so.

Oregon started all this with their different uniform each week philosophy. Now a lot of teams are wearing uniforms that don't even include their school colors.

Part of me likes them and part of me thinks they look like the airbrush painting on tailgate of a 1995 Chevy Silverado

You basically put into words what I've tried to over the last day or so that I've seen these. I love the idea/concept, but I feel like the art on them looks/feels exactly the way you stated.
