North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor, was hospitalized Friday following an incident at a campaign event in Mount Airy, a spokesperson for the campaign said late Friday.

Robinson was being treated for burns, according to Robinson campaign spokesman Michael Lonergan. “He is in good spirits,” Lonergan said in a text message. Matt Hurley, a Robinson campaign consultant, posted a similar account on social media.


Neither men provided details about the nature of the incident or the severity of the burns.

Robinson had been attending the Mayberry Truck Show & Parade in Mount Airy — the fourth of four campaign events the candidate was attending across the state on Friday.

“I was getting out of the truck and several of my fans and supporters were coming around the truck. I was trying to get out without running into them and doggone if I didn’t lay my hand on that tailpipe, the exhaust pipe,” Robinson said, showing his bandaged hand. “I am fine. It is just a minor second-degree burn, and it is just fine.”
