OK I’m a little confused with the fire Huff vitriol that has been going on this year. Before I post what I am going to post in my own opinion I’m not sold on Coach Huff and if they announced he won’t be coming back next year I wouldn’t be upset but I won’t be upset if he does come back. But what I am confused about is why is he being held to a different level than his predecessor.
Docs first 3 years when he was still playing in a good CUSA and was playing a good OOC schedule, he had 2 losing seasons, his first and third, and his one winning season, he was 7-6. He played in 1 bowl game and he won. He had zero signature wins in his first 3 years and had several blowout losses against good teams including getting stomped at home by Va Tech. During those 3 years his record against the MAC was 1-3 including getting blown out by Bowling Green and Ohio. His overall record after year 3 was 17-20. He went on to coach 8 more seasons, I don’t remember the fire Doc weekly threads during that time.
Compare that to Coach Huff, he is 22-16, he hasn’t yet had a losing season, he has had a strong OOC schedule that he has competed well in. He has been to bowls all 3 years assuming we go to a bowl this year. He has signature wins over Notre Dame, Va Tech and Navy. He has had some bad losses the BG game was horrible, the chokes against App State and ECU, and several games this year that were embarrassing. But at the end of the day his resume is 10 times better than Docs and there was no question he was coming after season 3?
If you say well Cali he was inheriting a good team. According to who? 2020 was a crazy year. Covid made everything nuts. But even with that we were terrible in our last 3 games including at home and we lost to another MAC team in a bowl game. I didn’t see this juggernaut that he was inheriting, I saw a team that had a good record playing cardboard cutout teams until the end of the season. When the competition picked up we got beat. I don’t think he took over a bad team but to act like it was some great team and he ruined it, the facts don’t back it up.
Doc took over a team that had won a bowl game, and played in the previous 5 years a very tough OOC and conference schedule. When the conference was still strong and the OOC was still tough Docs records were very similar to Snyder ( who was horrible). This is not a defense of Snyder he was awful.
So help me understand why is Huff so terrible? And Doc was worthy of getting 8 more seasons after his pitiful first 3 seasons? I see an extreme double standard that I’m not understanding. If you are wondering why I’m posting this I’m seeing a ton of Doc mentions in threads bashing Huff and I just want to know what you saw in Doc I. His first 3 years that you don’t see in Coach Huff.
