The last few years in Marshall sports have produced events that if some time traveler had filled me in, I would have laughed in his face.
The football team won the Sun Belt in football and got nothing for it. No bowl, no ranking, no positive press. Women’s basketball won the conference and made an appearance in the NCAA tournament only to have the promising first year coach bolt. We open an on campus, state of the art baseball facility. We become a National Champion in soccer, beating four big boy programs along the way. A few years later, we take down Ohio State to again play for a title. We beat both Virginia Tech and Notre Dame in football. We lose to a mediocre Bowling Green a week after beating Notre Dame. A Dr Pepper costs almost $7 at the stadium on game day.
Basketball has never progressed beyond mediocre. We put up a football scoreboard that spans haft a city block, but we keep the original rusty bathroom urinals. It has been a wild ride.
