New AD Names

I am convinced we need a new sheriff in town. New ideas, new ways of doing things.
Someone who the fans can rally around. Someone who is accessible.

Whoever it is, he better be very adept at building a fan base and raising funds.

The status quo won’t cut it.

Build fan base by winning championships.

a AD can do everything in his ability to generate a fan base but if the teams don’t win no one wants to pay to watch

They should have a deal where if you buy full price tickets to the first game you get half price for the second game if we lose. If we lose the next game prices get cut by half again.

Winning is important but if the AD doesn’t engage the fan base and create excitement, the fans won’t come to start.

I often feel the winning mantra is just an excuse for laziness within the AD.

The next AD needs to write a narrarive for MU that people can support.
There needs to be something ongoing each week that MU fans can be invested in physically and financially.

As it's been said, MU sucks with self promotion, and hopefully Brad Smith and the next AD can change that.

Good post!

I believe this decision will be left to Brad Smith and hopefully he makes a good choice.

Back to the topic of a new AD. I don't know, nor have I ever met, Jeff O'Malley. I'm sure he is a great guy and has a lot of love for Marshall (he's been here forever). However, I hope Marshall chooses someone from the outside as the new AD. Marshall needs new ideas all over campus - but, especially in the athletic department and the Big Green.

When is the last time you have eveer seen or heard anything proactive out of the Big Green? No plans to try and grow membership. They staff only contacts "big donors" and ask for more, instead of coming up and implementing ideas to cultivate new members. Love John Sutherland and his staff - but, we need someone from the outside with new ideas to hold a fire under their feet to create better student involvement, community relations and grow the membership

The old adage is " if it ain't broke - don't fix it." Marshall (and Huntington) operates more like "if it is broke - don't try and fix it."

How do you know he doesn’t have new ideas?

I think O'Malley has plenty of new concepts and an aggressive style. Look at the work on the SBC, the flexibility to deal with the baseball stadium, the promotion of MU to two bowl games he knew we'd never get it. I know for a fact the BG has specific goals in many different campaigns, with assignment to grow the number of members through contact and selling. I, however, can't attest to the timing of the BG challenges.

If anyone is a Herd fan and doesn't know the BG exists and is looking for donations at all levels from everyone, they're just with their head in the sand, or using "not being specifically asked" as an excuse for not giving.

If you feel you have to be personally known to dish out $60.00 a year, you're never going to be known. Maybe a surprise to many, but even the big donors give because they know it is needed, not because they've been specifically asked. Of course people with money are targeted harder than others, its not the people, its their money.

The BG has been at the same level of donors or close , for years. The fact that the growth of that body is terribly stagnant or slow tells me there is a huge communication issue between they, the fan base and alumni.
In my view, Marshall does a poor job building that relationship and emotional connection between the school and students. Thus, they as alumni feel no compelling reason to donate.

That said, student attendance at the football and basketball games has suffered for years, and that wont help Marshall or tbe BG when they come calling for donations in the future.

Not to nitpick but I would say the drive for another bowl game came from Huff and Jeff signed off on it.

Haven’t seen anything yet. He holding back in case he gets the main gig?

He gets big kudos for the SB transition.
I think Hamrick would've had that deal done before they did.

If he is holding back, then he's already doing a terrible job. If anything, just sharing his ideas for MU would be beneficial for everyone to see and possibly get on board.
