This has always been the case, btw.

Church attendance (easiest way to gauge this) goes way low from 18-30 years of age, then starts ticking up as people have kids and get involved in community activities. I've read church committee minutes from the 1830's that notes this exact same dynamic.

Are we talking about those who become disengaged from religion or actual committed atheists? Those are different ballgames there. Herdman said "Tend to", which implies the majority of actual atheists convert to Christianity; that sounds like poppycock to me. The people you describe were simply disengaged but still believers. Now that I believe. I am more likely to attend church now than in my 20s and 30s.
