Based on what Doc said today about hopefully never having to start a freshman QB again, it sounds like a two horse race between Holcome and Birdsong for the starting position. My bet is Litton will most likely redshirt and Garvin (being a RS freshman) will be third in line behind Holcome and Birdsong. My bet is Holcome will be our guy based on his knowledge of the system. Thoughts?

We'll see. I think it will be Birdsong. He's had a year in our system plus he has regular starting experience. He certainly has the physical tools. We should be good with either I think.

We have a pound it running game, so its not as imperative to have the QB make difficult throws like we used to have to do. I believe we will be fine and have another good chance to run the table next year as well.

Birdsong didn't take snaps in our system until Bowl prep. He pretty much spent all fall learning 14 different schools plays to run the scout team

I think it will be Birdsong. Gunnar could pull the upset, but I actually think this was a great year for Birdsong. He got to adjust to football at this level and had a lot of chances to work on his skills. I think Litton will be terrific when his time comes. Although he is a tad small, Garvin has some great measurables (speed, strength) and a really good pedigree.

Gunnar has the edge as of this minute due to significantly more time in the system... I know that nobody wants to put stock in snaps during garbage time but it does matter that he has been on the field a few times.

I expect it may come down to poise and knowledge versus pure athleticism... We shall see what wins out this spring.

My question is...

Who would require the system to adjust for them more based on their pro's and con's?

I know the coaches recruited QB's who fit the system, but Cato may be a rarety in how a QB could fit SO WELL in the system SO FAST.

Both Litton and Birdsong are good, but which one would require more adjustments to the system (or vice versa, system adjusting TO THEM) in order to be successful?

My relief is Devon Johnson is still here. Not to say the QB's couldn't go out and win on their own, but he gives relief for our offensive productivity.

Those snaps were in garbage time, but most of them were against the other teams 1st team defense. I thought he played very well in his backup role, and he has a lot of potential.

I'm glad Rockhead returns, but as great as he is, he's not immune to injuries. We should have a qb who can make great throws as well as handing the ball off in case something were to happen like it did this year. Johnson out totally changes the dynamics of our offense.

All herd teams that did well had a qb that led the team. Whoever he will be has a great team to led

I'm pretty sure Birdsong has been digesting and implementing the playbook at every opportunity. Yeah, he was scout MVP but not all his time was spent studying the opponents playbook.

Birdsong went against our #1 defense all year...Gotta do something for his poise and getting up to speed.

I was not real impressed with the mop up duty when Holcombe came in this past year. There were several chance for him to display flashes of the next great QB at MU and I just didn't see it.

I believe Birdsong wins the starting job but I could be wrong.

You mean, going 40 yards on a read option play isn't flashy? He had to hand the ball off a lot when he came in but he was accurate and quick on his passes. It should be a fun competition this Spring.

One 40 yard option run does not make Holcomb a good QB. During most games where he did mop-up duty, he was stiff and tentative - but remember he was far better than Garvin who may have regressed. Look for Garvin to leave unless we find ourselves in a situation where only one QB is standing.

But that could happen. Last year, Toledo would have beaten Northern Illness and likely would have won the MAC if the Rockets were not forced to play a wide-receiver (former HS QB) at QB after all four roster QBs got hurt. And who can forget Ohio State . . .

That's why it's called mop up. You keep the clock running. If the boss calls a run, then running play it is my friend.

I wont feel all warm and cozy until their is no doubt who the next herd qb will be. Not great we dont know now.
