Talking about what OC MU can hire.

I think all can agree that the offense has the tools and players to compete with just about anyone.
When Legg's offense did work, it looked great and with more consistency, they could be a real force.
I'll get it started...

I'd look and offer as much as I could at Donnie Kirpatrick. I'd toss a blank check at him.
What he has been doing at JMU is basically reminding me of the MU FCS days. They absolutely destroyed teams in the 2 years he's been OC.
The MU job would be a step up and certainly could entice many OC's on the FBS level to send a resume.
One thing about this team is it is basically ready to go, with several players who have played together for a year, a bowl win, and confidence.
Kirpatrick would not need to rebuild much of the offense and his hire alone would give us preseason votes.

The offense depends on Chase, so a lot depends on what happens in the off season with his attitude, work ethic, and his ability to pick up the new scheme. I honestly think the offense needs to be kept simple for Chase.

You know how we (Marshall) do it. There will be a handful of great candidates, but we won't attempt to even reach out to a damn one of them.

Nah, instead, Doc and Hamrick will settle on some retread who is looking for his last stop to retire.

maybe those fans staying away will write checks to hire someone good. Most big D1 schools are paying their coordinators more then what Doc makes now so its not going to be easy

We only need to pay up to standards within our conference. Doc's pay isn't bad relative to his position in CUSA. I don't know about the assisant coaches. I do know we aren't the poverty stricken employer everyone makes us out to be.

I would not be surprised if we find out that Legg wasn't the problem. The same coordinator was here during the years that everybody would like to go back to.

For those of you that are subscribers to Old Fairfield, the “Coaching Hot Board” is posted over there with the three names we’ve heard so far.

Legg had a big part in it, but QB play and running game issues certainly played a part as well. Cato called the right play at the line of scrimmaged 95% of the time, averaging about 7.9 yds per pass, and he was one of the 4 best QBs in our history. Litton is an above average FBS QB, but the conservative play calling and slow down of the offense has hurt us worse, as he can't get into a rhythm unless we are in the 2-minute offense. Litton averages about 6.7 Yds per pass for his career with a 7.0 average in 2017. Litton isn't Cato, but he is above average overall while our offense has been bottom third or 4th of FBS so Legg's play calling and tempo has to take a large portion of the blame.

They will want to keep continuity and will hire Goebell. Mark it down. This will be a predictable and conservative pick just like our offense. I hope I'm wrong

And Goebell may get it also because of others turning down the job. We may not have the option to get who we really want. Kind of like we wanted Mike Dantoni but got his brother.

But I think the fanbase as a whole would be severely disappointed if we promoted Goebell. I don't think it brings any excitement to the program if they do. Especially since he doesn't have OC experience at this level.

You have to realize that we can’t afford too many people “at this level.”

Marshall ranked 4th in the East Divison alone of what they pay their coordinators. FAU, FIU, and MTSU all have a combined pay (for their coordinators) that’s higher than Marshall.

Then we will get what we pay for and the administration can't sit back and blame fans when they don't pony up the cash for donations and season tickets. Plain and simple. If you want to be mediocre then they will continue to hire cheap talent

I mean, they’ll spend what the budget will allow for and that’s all they can do.

We all know budget and salary will the deciding factor in the hire so I say let's go find a young coach, even if he is currently at a FCS or even D2 school. If we get 2 or 3 seasons out of that type of hire, so be it because that'll be close to the end of Doc's current contract and depending on how that goes, we may have wholesale changes anyway.

Doc even took a reduction in pay to give his coordinators more money.

Then the administration needs to think outside the box and hire a position coach or Co-OC from a successful program that has a potent offense as the next Marshall OC. It should to be someone that’s looked at within the coaching community as an up-and -comer and has been around some excellent football minds that could make the jump to OC.

Ryan Day, Ohio State
Greg Austin, Nebraska
Garin Justice, Arizona
Cale Gundy, OKlahoma
Brent Key, Alabama
Josh Henson, Oklahoma State
Justin Stepp, Arkansas
Kodi Burns, Auburn
Jeff Scott, Clemson

As mentioned already, Bob Stitt is another name that definitely deserves consideration as well. Congrats on the bowl win.

I'm adding Fitzpatrick from JMU.
If we really want a true OC, we'll have to look at the FCS level.
We could maybe get a position coach from a P5 school, but they may not do as well as an OC.
The FCS has plenty to choose from in regards to OC's on the rise.
A benefit of MU having this now happen, allows us a chance to see some potential OC's during big games and hopefully, really compile a solid list of potentials.

I would be open to seeing just how much Goebble did this season, because our offense was totally different in a few games which makes me wonder how much input he had in those.
Also, its only fair to evaluate everyone equally.
