One more Head Coaching vacancy just announced

Too much talent in the State of Georgia for them to start recruiting. Also I would be really worried about Doc and the UGA job

I grew up a Florida fan, and of course I strongly disliked UGA. That all changed when Donnan got there for obvious reasons, and I continued to root for Georgia because of Richt. Not any more... Even though my son recently graduated from UGA, I'm done with that redneck fan base.

I think Donnan fixed the Herd coach to UGA forever.

Funny it's a premier job in college football yet UGA has NO indoor practice facility, ".I think" still.,
Donnan lobbied hard for one and as told football is an outdoor sport by Dooley.

I hope the best for Richt, truly a class act.

I just hope the Texas fan base gives Strong enough time to right that sinking ship.

When are you gonna realize that no P5 school is gonna come after Doc for a HC job? He has a good gig at Marshall but he is a career assistant at the P5 level and none of the big boys are likely going to take a chance on a 58-year old coach.

I hope your right jocksniffer. For once we agree on something.

I hope Hogirl stays at eeerbilly u forever too! I love that little bitch! Hes funny.

I'll HAPPILY take and keep Holliday till he decides to hang up the whistle. He's a relentless recruiter, a builder of boys into MEN , and a class act. He's never embarrassed Marshall once. Let's face it we are a mid major, but a Top 3 mid major to coach for. Not a bad gig when you can knock down 700k, drive 20 minutes to work from your palatial farm and keep an eye on your daughters attending the best school in the state of WV. Why leave?

If he goes to UGA he would need a minimum of 2.5 million per year to match the economic buying power of 700k in wv. Yes I live in Georgia, please don't "enlighten" me on your next theory.

Unless you live in Buckhead I'm not certain how you come up with 700k is equivalent to 2.5 million? Yes, I also lived in GA, and the cost of living is not that much different. Once again greenhouse you prove to be clinically insane.

When you pay a coach $$$$millions a year and invest $$hundreds of millions more in a program like UGA.......at least you could do is win a few conference championships during a 15 year period (Richt managed just 2 within his first 5 seasons). It seems to me the same folks who seem dismayed that a coach like Richt would be fired would also sit idly by and simply be happy about winning %'s with little concern over winning or competing for championships.

Richt seemed like a great man personally, but he also always seemed less than interested (nonchalant) about competing for and winning championships. Frankly, I am surprised he lasted this long.

I imagine they looked at Pelini and Nebraska and noticed that, despite the wins he had, replacing him was difficult...and at least he was consistent with winning.
It has become about money and UGA fans will pay to see their team win...and Richt was consistent with that.
Even further and more closer to home was UT and Phillip Fulmer. While he did begin to underperform, I believe he was let go a little too early. They then had the head coaching nightmare that has now, possibly, been fixed. But goodness did it not come with a price.
Plus Richt did manage to make BCS bowl games at the perfect times...the loss to wvu hurt, but it gave him an extension to turn the program around...then he beat Hawai'i which secured him even more.
He really did make his wins and progress at just the right times for UGA to continue to allow him on staff, and they saw what happened if they fired consistency.

I do find it a little surprising that UGA could not win the SEC East when it was as down as it was.

It has been said that Doc is very happy here. He likely would not leave for any job and it would have to be something pretty spectacular. He would also give Marshall a chance to match or counter the offer in some way.
So its obvious he does not need the money...considering WV is kind of a cheap place to live, he is from here, and he can really make himself a household name while here. His age, also, is a bit of a factor as well.
But he has been consistent so far. If he wins the bowl game then thats 3 years of 10 or more wins. Thats a huge step from where we had been before he came here.
I do agree that Marshall could be a top 3 G5 school to coach for as well. We have put some recognizable players in the pros. We also have a bitchy but loyal fanbase...and finally, we have history.

Plus, when you are a successful head coach, anywhere, life is easier. When was the last time Nick Saban actually fully paid for something?

I totally agree with your assessment that Doc is happy here but don't kid yourself...everybody needs money and if a program made a run at Doc with a $2-3 million contract, I think he'd take it in a heartbeat. Even if you got fired after 4 years, the additional money would serve as a nice retirement fund.

The point in my original post was that it's not likely any P5 school is going to make a run at Doc. Doc is a good guy who is surrounded by family and friends at Marshall and I hope he retires here.

Being a State employee in WV for over 30 years won't he already qualify for a nice Pension when he retires? Plus I doubt he has been paying a mortgage on his family Farm.

Yes he will receive a state pension on the money he receives in salary from the state (not counting the additional money received from outside sources such as the Big Green Club, camps, radio, etc.)but are you equating a state pension with a $2-3 million salary? I suspect that he will also receive a substantial deferred comp package from his days at WVU.

Football has been good to Doc through the years and I'm not suggesting that he's going to be desperate for money when he retires but if someone were to offer a $2-3 million contract (and that's a contract that Marshall can't match), I think he would take the money and run. I would.

Marshall might not be able to offer her but if our boosters want our football program to remain at the current level, they will need to upgrade his pay if he does receive offers

They key to that is he will allow them to do so and if they do offer an amount he likes, he will stay. He won't simply bolt when flashed money. Marshall did raise their salary for him as well when Pitt called him.
Marshall also doesn't have to match it, they will need to raise their salary however...something negotiable on both sides.

Doc is not on the short list of any place that has the kind of $$ to make a real difference. In a couple of years he will be past the age where a person is even considered.

Doc probably has, Lord willing, eight to twelve years left before he can cash in his chips and do whatever retired people do.

BTW my son who is a sports journalist for the AJC as well as one of the content editors and reporters for their new digital platform Dawgnation is pretty sure a deal with Kirby Smart has already been worked out and will be announced after the SEC Championship game on Saturday.
