Sometimes I watch the old westerns on TV and think without all our modern sprays, disinfectants, air fresheners, and hygiene practices, those times must have really smelled BAD.

If you vent an outhouse properly and dig it deep it’s manageable. Better than the modern day porta shitters. My grandma house in Kansas had an old one about 100 feet from house and i used it for fun when we’d visit in summer. Can’t imagine trekking out there at night during winter though in old days.
