ODU is ranked 181 out of 182 schools in the Sagarin ratings. Charlotte is 173. ODU apologists respond in 1...2...3...

1) Both of those teams are better than UTEP.
2) Sagarin isn't a great formula two weeks into the season
3) Probably not a great idea to mock two schools for being bad in Sagarin while Marshall currently sits at #92 behind numerous FCS/Sun Belt schools.

It was a tongue in cheek comment for a few posters who seem to be in love with ODU. I don't have anything against them, but to read some posts, you would think they are God's gift to CUSA.

ODU won 9 or 10 games just a few years ago and came into the league bowl eligible their first year even though they couldn't qualify for one. Charlotte, who knows, still done nothing much.

ODU needs that stadium built if they want to build something real. I figured they both would be good basketball additions to help the conference rep, but missed on that one as well.

This whole "potential" ho-ha was more based on how many people live within so many miles of these campuses. Like the similar crapola spewed by THE AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!!! it forgets the fact than not very many people really give a flying f*** about the local college in these cities.

We forget how special and unique we are to have the fan base we do.

You say this about ODU and our fans quite often.

The board has an extensive archiving system so finding examples should be relatively easy, yet I can't find a single post that fits what you described. In fact, I've never been able to find one.

That's odd, right?

Almost makes me think you present this straw man argument over and over again because you do in fact have something against ODU.

Almost.

This board is also more difficult to hack into than herdfans.com. Then, again, breaking into my five year old niece's diary is harder than hacking herdfans.

Chris, I don't have anything against the school; but I could name 2-3 posters who regularly post comments about ODU and their potential when ODU is mentioned. I'll leave it alone but I am just as sure their past comments toward that school would prove my point.

I have nothing against ODU. It seems like a fine school in a fine part of the country. Same can be said for UNCC. Fine school, fine place. Same can be said for all of the directional Floridas and a lot more schools.

But that does not equal "potential". Fact is, as the nation grows and changes, there are developing urban schools with huge student bodies. So many students it is easy, or at least easy-ish, to support sports on the back of the student fees, almost alone. And here come the "potential" people. Telling us how big these schools are and how many people live in these cites.

Just because you live in a town, does not mean you follow the local college. The biggest programs in the Tidewater area are Virginia Tech and then Virginia. And then a whole plethora of other schools.

I looked up ODU's profile. 63% female. 48% older than traditional college age. 61% work full time. 55% have kids. 10% dorms.

Potential?

This is a self-selected group. People using ODU to get a degree, most of them after learning what life is like as an adult with only HS. Using the local college to get ahead. Which is great. Which is smart. Which is wonderful for them.

But it does not translate into them caring, now or throughout their lives, into fans of ODU sports. Nor does it mean that, no matter how many zillions of people live within howmanyever miles, that very many non-alumni care about the place.

Marshall, and Huntington's relationship with it, are special. We forget how special. And it does not exist everywhere.

No. This is completely, entirely, Samantha-typical bullshit. The statistics you presented are for ODU ONLINE. You’re using statistics for their online school which is entirely different from the normal, on-campus school enrollment.

I immediately knew it was bullshit when you claimed that 61% work full-time and that 55% have children.

Here is the link where you got your info. It explains that it is for their online school:

https://online.odu.edu/about/at-a-glance

Even if you were too stupid to not be able to identify that those numbers seemed odd, how could you miss the part that listed only 30% of the students living in Virginia?

Why must you constantly post bullshit information on here in order to support your arguments? I don’t know if it’s because you’re a dishonest piece of shit who has bogus arguments, thus having to constantly fabricate things or if it’s because you’re too stupid to know any better.

And somebody please quote my comments so Samantha sees them.

Schools that transition from FCS to FBS typically enjoy a bump when they first transition, for a variety of factors but none the least because of all the transfers they attract. Our most famous player ever came to MU under such circumstances.

It is very hard to maintain that bump, and harder still to swim in this depth and still sell tickets. ODU, Charlotte and UAB will have similar sized fanbases within 2-3 years.

"Similar" to whom? Us? Ha. Laughable.

Similar to one another? Meaning, more or less nobody? You got me there.

BTW, UAB went I-A the same year we did.

Also interested in the list of teams that had a "bump" after going I-A. There is Marshall, and ?????
