QB1

Not sure I’d declare him QB1 without him having even taken a snap in Marshall pads yet.

well if he doesn't pan out I think we are in big trouble this year. The future is bright but forcing any of the 3 new kids into a starter role this year would be a bumpy ride. Losing wells was huge and I am not afraid to say it. Oh well next man up.

He didn't come here without some assurance he would be the starter this year... The real intrigue in regards to the QB room is who will be the backup this year and thus have the inside track to the starter job in 2023... Zamora, Fancher, Pennington, plenty of talent there, just need to separate themselves.

What planet are you all living on that you think the guy with multiple Big 12 starts, and was not terrible, could potentially be beat out by a freshman or Fancher?
Have you seen his stats? They aren't amazing. Okay, he's a P5 qb who has a handful of starts. The sticking point to me is that we are his 3rd school. Why? Learning the system is a big part of it also. Team chemistry, etc... I'm not saying he can't or won't be the man, I'm just saying the proof is in the pudding.

But the point still stands, is there THAT big of a gap that no one emerged from the spring game to challenge him? You know how our fans are...

Considering doc never really developed anyone into a better player, especially the qb position, is it any wonder that the qb room is bare? Hopefully huff “gets that fixed”

Agreed! Anyone that puts on a jersey should be competing to start at every position.
This isn't the 1960's and kids today aren't the Junction Boys.

Columbi is a P5 transfer who had multiple places he could have gone. He has one year left to show what he's got, so he picked a school (us) where he was "assured" he would be the QB1 for this year.

Also, once Wells left, this became the plan. Huff and his guys are smart enough to know that the chances of a true freshman coming in and being ready to play on day one are slim. If in their minds Fancher also isn't ready, the prudent thing to do was bring in the most qualified one-year grad transfer available and give the young guys a year to learn and become more physically prepared to play college football.

The competition this year is for QB2... Next year the battle will be for the starting job.

More and more you see true freshman coming in and playing or even starting, even in the P5. High schoolers better prepare their bodies now and often work with trainers year round.

EXACTLY! Doc got lucky that Shuler persuaded Cato to come here.

IF we have to throw one of the freshmen out there this fall as a starter, we are in deep doo doo. I hope this staff puts more of an emphasis on developing QB's than our previous staff did.

You’re correct, but almost any true freshman starting at a Major will be a first or second round draft pick because they’re genetic freaks.

That’s typically not the caliber of player we get out of high school.

I totally agree with your take on QB 1. Freshman should never start unless there is an emergency. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Coach Huff absolutely had to go after a starting QB. We’ll just have to wait and see how he performs. I’m optimistic he’ll be fine.

He wasn't a bad player at Tech, not going to make them forget about Mahomes but he was a serviceable player.

Bwahaha wasn't there a tweet from an MU freshman QB where he was getting praise for practicing in an NFL QB's camp and everyone was saying, "wow, our future is great! This kid gets it!!! Look at his dedication!!" While others were questioning why he'd post it to Twitter.
Easy how quick you go from support to panic.
Calm down. MU is in good hand regardless who starts.

Is that a knock on recruiting if we don’t have a talented backup?

Never said we don't have a talented backup.

I said their talent is TBD and that they're not ready to be the starter.

No one truly knows how talented a QB is until they're in the fire.

Kids can look like an All-American in practice and 7-on-7's, but when the heat is on......that's when you know how talented a kid is or isn't.

Yep, No athlete ever posted a bad play or screw up on Twitter or Hudl.

I believe the offense will be "all in" with Ali & the running game. I would expect Colombi will be asked to be a running threat and expect Fancher to have some run packages too. I don't expect this year to be a Air Raid. If the OL can deliver in the running game, it is the right focus.

I'm holding out hope for Colombi to be a good pickup and even really good. However his path to Marshall does give me pause.

No doubt his experience gives him a leg up, but let's not hang our hats on the "well he did play in a P5 conference," because there have been plenty times we've made that assumption and come away disappointed.

He backed up Jordan Love for 3 years which is no slight to him. However everyone assumed he'd take over, but as soon as the new HC brought in a trasnfer he entered the portal to follow UtSt's former HC which was now the OC at TT. Even with that familiarity he couldn't win the starting job until there was an injury. Then after a handful of games last year he gets hurt and then entered the portal. According to one site I read the QB that came in after him played well enough that they never went back to Colombi.

Still he's here now. He's wearing G&W and this is his last stand to be a starter. If he's the starter going into game 1 I'll be pulling for him to have success.

Why in the blue hell would you want Colombi to run when you have one of the best RB tandems in the conference?

A QB who is a threat to run makes the defense think twice about keying on an RB. The QB doesn't have to run but if he is good at the read option, it makes the offense all that more effective. Cato was an expert at that later in his career.

Good coaching will do that for a QB.

Cato was an exception to a running threat QB considering so many seemed to have been injury prone since.
Even in a terrible league like CUSA, it happened to us.
I'd rather Colombi be able to throw a deep ball, or just be accurate as his way of keeping the defense thinking twice.

Agree we need to be balanced. But he does have to the ability to run if needed.

I said running threat, not running back. Clearly, Ali will be the primary RB. I think we will be a 65% run/35% pass this year.
If we are going to use the same playbook as the last two years (and there is no reason t o think we won't), this is spot on... One thing that drove a lot of us crazy about Wells is when we would run the delayed RPO play, Wells almost never kept the ball. If you aren't going to be a threat to keep it, you are just giving the defense an extra second to hit your RB in the backfield.

Columbi doesn't have to be Lamar Jackson or Kyler Murray... But he at least needs to keep defenses honest in the RPO game. If he has 4-5 productive carries (preferably where he slides or gets out of bounds) each week that's good enough.

Ali and Laborn can carry the load at RB, and I assume they will, at least through the first 3-4 games of the year. So what Columbi needs to be is efficient by limiting turnovers, making smart throws and staying ahead of the chains.

basically what a offensive scheme is designed to do is score points and a defensive scheme is to try and limit the number of points a offense can accumulate in a given time period. A coach can help his team by selecting the correct strategy on each possession to out due the other team, gaining more points and ultimately ending up victorious after the completion of allowed time.

I just peeked in on this thread and started here. Maybe there's some context but I'm not willing to read the read of the posts to find it. This one reminds me of Leonard Hofstadter in the episode he tries to watch football with Penny's friends.

Best part is Sheldon gave a better analysis of football than all the Nebraska natives because....Texas.

Just had to post the obvious, people on here all giving their ideas for the perfect Marshall season, so I thought I would add to the fun.

my real opinion, WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS!
