Rankings of all D1 b-ball coaches by performance

Just curious why do you think it is worthless? not taking a side here, just trying to understand what valid measurable should be used in determine growth and success amongst coaches, and what would be the ceiling. That’s all.

We have a quantifiability problem as a society... Everyone wants a nice easy list from 1-300 or whatever the number may be.

My problem with this particular list has nothing to do with Marshall, or our coach, but rather the top 10... If someone can explain to me how any coach in college basketball has done a better job than Jay Wright at Villanova over the last 15 years I'd like to hear it. I recognize that Tony Bennett has totally turned UVA around, and I appreciate his resume as well, but Jay Wright not being in the top 5 is absurd.

I realize this is a stat based article.I just think that having DD that far down the list is wrong.I'm not trying to start an argument. I think he should be ranked way higher than that in the top 100 for sure. Is he an elite coach? No but he is a good coach who has turned this program around.

He’s done a really nice job. But you go back to 2002, there have been a lot of coaches who have made runs equal or greater to what Dan has done. It’s not a knock on him, just the reality.

I don’t want anyone else, but I think the ranking is fair.

Your points are well taken and I like Jay Wright but let me push back a little.
Wright and Villanova have advanced past the first weekend only 6 times in 19 years. Not real good.

My rebuttal would be... UVA in 10 years under Tony Bennett... Has made it past the first weekend 3 times and failed to make the NCAA tournament 3 times. They have one title. Yet he is number one on the list.

If NCAA tournament success is the measuring stick, then Roy Williams should be number one... In 17 years at UNC he has won 3 titles, made it past the first weekend 11 times and only failed to make the dance 1 time (obviously they wouldn't have made it this season).

If the measure is career achievement, then Coach K should be number one... 40 years at Duke, 5 national titles, 9 trips to the final game. Hasn't missed the dance since 1995.

The point being, these lists are subjective in trying to put a nice numerical ranking bow on something like coaching... Its just a talking point for guys like us on message boards.

This list isn't subjective, though. It's completely objective based on raw data inputs. It also only takes into account seasons dating back to 2002 (because that's how far back KenPom goes). Coach K loses out on two NCs because of that limitation.

You could argue whether the correct data inputs are being used but those inputs are still objective.

Personally I believe raw performance should be more than 34% of the total score. Would help coaches like Roy Williams, K and Jay Wright move up the list a bit.

Anyways, I find data modeling stuff like this fascinating.

It also tracks the elevating of programs. Tony Bennett did more in his time at Washington State than what's been done in that program's history. Then you combine that with what he's done at UVA since taking over and it's not a huge head scratcher.

Washington State 3 years prior: 36-49
Washington State 3 years during: 66-30 (Round of 32, Sweet 16, & NIT)
Washington State 3 years after: 50-43 (1 NIT, 1 CBI)

Virginia 3 years prior: 45-43
Virginia 10 years during: 277-96 (4 regular season conference titles)

That's hard to argue, man.

Tony Bennett is the flavor of the month. Ol Roy has SEVEN double digit loss seasons and frankly his records are a fraud as he helped oversee the biggest academic/athletic scandal in history. At least two of his banners should be in the landfill.
But these different rankings make it interesting, numbers can be massaged to give one the outcome they desire.
