Regional Airport History: Why I hate Kanawha/Charleston self serving politics

Great article, thanks. It's terrible how allergic WVians are to progress and how personal interests outweigh growth.

Here is an interesting point. The Yeager Airport Master plan even calls for a new airport. The powers that be in Kanawha County seems to feel that they may have a suitable site out I77 North. You know outside of the I64 Corridor. Also. Yeager operates under an FAA Safety Waiver for the safety over run that is now slipping into the Elk River. I still fly Yeager. It's really my only option. However. I really have a hard time knowing what I know and landing at Yeager.

The problem with Yeager is it just has physical limitations due to its location on a mountain top. Although the Charleston location doesn't best serve the two largest population bases in WV (including Oh/Ky) like a Putnam County location, I would be okay with a Charleston based regional airport if there was an adequate site that not only can expand the runway to the lengths needed to serve that type of venture, but also have the adjacent land to house the ancillary business interest that would be supported by it. Unfortunately, the local politics successfully killed something that would benefit the entire area economically for years to come for their own provincial and selfish interest. It is sad and a testament to why WV is struggling.

The fallacy in their logic wasn't more evident when they argued against a regional airport because it wasn't necessary, but then promoted Yeager as the place it should be located. When I turn on the radio and listen to the local politicians spouting their parochial self serving points of view, it makes me sick.

Both Huntington and Charleston have black eyes and stunted growth from making terrible, wholly selfish decisions throughout history, whether it was decisions about malls, interstates, airports, etc.

You'll probably see areas like Morgantown (or northeastern WV in general) and the panhandles refuse to make those same mistakes and flourish over the next few decades.

I agree Huntington isn't exempt from blame with other issues. My intent wasn't to imply that Charleston is alone in guilt when it comes to decisions that promote individuals over regions. This article was about the regional airport issue and Huntington was pretty much on board with it even though they had their own airport that would be impacted as well. But yeah...the mall and the interstate are oft repeated examples of Huntington mistakes.

Honestly, if I were raising children in WV I would teach them from about Day 5 into their life:

Get OUT!

Sad but true. It is never going to change. Why people remain in Southern WV is beyond me. Your future is so limited and opportunity is not there.
