We have 15 games on Cam as a starter. Let’s look where we are and his performance.
First, let’s establish some bench marks:
There are 115 QBs in FBS that meet the requirement of an average of at least 15 attempts per game to be ranked. That makes QB #58 the median point in the data set. So #58 in each category:
Pass efficiency rating: 138.7
Cam is currently 83rd at 126.2. Of his 15 starts he has only exceeded 138.7 six times. This means he has performed as an average or better QB in only 40% of his starts. Three of those six occurred last year in his first 7 starts and three have occurred in his 8 starts this year. In other words, there has been little to no change/growth in his efficiency.
Passing TDs: 12
Cam has 7 in the first 8 games tying him for 89th with 7 others. Out of the 8 tied for 89th Cam has attempted between 50 and 138 more passes. He has 7 TDs on 262 attempts, or 1 TD for every 37 attempts. That is the worst ratio for any QB with at least 200 attempts. It is also regression from last year when he threw a TD every 23.5 attempts.
Interceptions: 5
Cam has thrown 8 interceptions in 8 games making him tied for 106th with 3 others. Those 3 others have thrown 16, 15 and 13 TDs versus Cam’s 7. As a matter of fact, he is the only QB in the country that has thrown at least 8 interceptions that hasn’t thrown at least 10 TDs. He is throwing one interception every 32.75 attempts. This is worse than last year when he threw one every 39 attempts.
Yards per completion: 11.88
Cam is 101st at 10.49. Again, regression from last year when he ranked 65 at 11.89.
So in conclusion, given the above, why does anyone support this continued experiment? He has become less efficient, has the lowest TD and highest interception ratio of any QB with 200 attempts, and is throwing shorter this year than last. He is playing worse than last year and is playing worse than he was earlier this year. He’s skiing downhill.
