Rice game in trouble

Of course, I’m pretty sure the Rice faculty had higher gpa’s than did Houston’s, so they may be just a little faster on the uptake than their colleagues down the road hahahahhaha

If you are Rice, there is no incentive to play against MU... Dropping a road game and the associated travel costs, and not getting beat in the process, is an easy decision to make. Especially if the "metrics" give them an out to make such a decision.

I would not be at all shocked to see more of this down the line... Syracuse doesn't want to go get demolished at Clemson? - Numbers are up... A terrible MTSU team doesn't want to pay to go play North Texas? - Numbers are up. Etc.

It's the perfect excuse too. Something, that wouldn't happen during any normal season, can happen now. Let's say we win out. Might lose out on a bigger bowl just based solely on number of games played. Which is something no one can control.

I am grasping a bit here, but will the result of P5 conferences not filling their slots (by default) give G5’s opportunities at bigger paydays in higher-tier bowl games, or will ESPN just water down win-loss requirements so the major players don’t have to take less of the pie home?

Im sure it will be the latter... I read somewhere last week where the bowl games are talking about making the requirement to be eligible less than a .500 record. They almost have to. With just 76 teams playing this season it means that every team in the field could theoretically go to a bowl game (even if they go 0-10).

And before anyone starts saying "Cut back some of the crappy bowl games!" think of how big a task that would be. Who gets to decide that the Birmingham Bowl is better or worse than the Bahamas Bowl, the Poinsettia Bowl, the Pinstripe Bowl, etc.... Get ready to watch UTEP (1-9) vs. ECU (1-9) in the Bahamas on a random Tuesday at Noon.

The minor bowl games mostly belong to ESPN outright. With the B10 and P12 panicked out, along with two of the G5 as well, having a full bowl schedule will be impossible. With the panic still going on, flying two random teams to Tampa or Birmingham or Memphis to play before cardboard cutouts makes no sense. And nobody really wants to losing teams play anyway. Therefore, IMHO, ESPN will start subtracting bowls from the bottom up. Thus the chances of a G5 getting a "name" bowl game are huge.
