I saw Hal play for the Herd though I was a very young grade schooler when he graduated. Hal and Jule Rivlin had a classic father/son love/hate relationship.
As a youngster my Dad took me to the old Memorial Fieldhouse to see Greer play. First African-American to play at Marshall under Jule Rivlan and what a player along with the great Leo Byrd.
Prayers to his family and I’m sure he was pleased as we’re all Herd fans for us winning our conference and in the NCAA.
This is a story I have heard since I was a kid. Our eye doctor was Al Esposito (Espozeetoh). Supposedly, Hal's eyesight was not the best when he started playing for the Herd. A visit to the young Dr. Al and he was fitted with an early set of contact lenses. The rest, as they say, is history!
RIP Hal Greer
