I had an unusual experience this morning. I was waiting in line at one of the local building supply locations. An elderly man in the adjacent checkout started up a conversation.
He was holding a stack of molding and said, “Guess I’ll have to go home and do some outside work.”
“Nice day for it,” I replied. “Supposed to be sunny with moderate temperatures and plants are starting to bloom.”
The fellow seemed to be irritated by my reply and said to me, “You must be from Florida and not a West Virginian. It is not a nice day. Too cold.” He kept repeating that I was not from West Virginia. He even told the clerk, “This guy is not from here.”
I’ll eventually learn to not make eye contact and keep my mouth shut while waiting in store lines. I believe the guy was a Democrat.
