Terrible situation.

I fly up there at least once a month. So far, shows I am still on time. Let's see how this goes.

Crazy what happened. Atleast your flight is day time. Although footage clearly shows both aircraft were lit up with appropriate safety lights.
I’ll be curious to see what actuallyhappened there. The helicopter was on a training fight. I wonder if they were in the wrong place at the wrong time when they shouldn’t have been?

I sold some equipment for use on the runway years ago. Surprised me how small it is. I went in the middle of the night and they shut traffic off. Right there at the end of it near the water. They were changing the approach. Got to drive out there. The runway there is not very big in terms of runways.

On the ground at DCA. Smooth flight and on time. Pilot said not allowed to fly within 15 miles of other aircraft right now which slightly delayed takeoff.

I could see boats and a little debris in the river but wasn’t in the window seat so hard to see. Lots of boats in the river.

Completely clear up by Arlington and the Washington Monument. Most of the river up this way is still frozen. No boats in the river. There is a small army of media just outside the airport set up in a field with tents and everything.

I have also read airline pilots have been complaining about the way military helicopters operate in and around the airport for some time now.
That would not surprise me.

DCA should have been closed long ago in favor of IAD, but Congress Critters and lobbyists are too lazy to travel 26 miles.

Could be as simple as it's flu season...or even the other one had to take a dump.

Movies make us believe ATC has a dozen or more controllers all the time. Not even close to reality.
Yeah, but if you read the article, they typically have at least two during that timeframe.

Well they did intersect the airliner's glide path from the side. I'd say that would be a safe bet...

I hadn’t seen the close up video at the time of that post. We also now know the helicopter should have been below 200 feet regardless. I read they were at 325 but I’m not sure that is confirmed.

ATC supervisor let the other controller leave early.

Probably going to be one of those things were a series of events/mistakes leads to tragedy. What a terrible thing.
