NIL creating competitive imbalance

I think it's funny that Nic Saban is the most concerned about a growing "competitive imbalance" due to NIL deals... But I do agree with the premise that schools shouldn't be able to "buy" kids.

The question is, how can the government/NCAA/schools work together to get it under control?... The easiest way would be a "NIL cap," but I don't know the logistics of that, or what the cap number would be, $50,000 a year? $100,000 a year? $250,000 a year? etc.

The working together shop has sailed the cats out of the bag now and it’s not going back in

Personally, I think the endless transfer portal is a bigger problem right now, as its potential to affect all schools is much greater. A kid who is going to be offered 100K a year to play ball, is probably not looking at Marshall or most G5's for that matter. It looks like the P5's are essentially trying to lobby for a salary cap. It's much more damaging for programs like Marshall to have their team raided by P5 programs who need to restock at years end and go shopping at the G5 level. I do think the transfer portal has its place however, there needs to be a 1-time transfer cap put into place.

Supreme Court would say no to any thing like that.

And I can certainly see why Saban is on the side he is on. Alabama is a poor state. There is way more $$ floating around in other places.
So the question becomes... How many years before the schools with the deepest pockets start winning all the championships?

Theoretically, these handful of teams and their super boosters should be able to pay enough kids to win.

Oregon -- Phil Knight (Billionaire)
Ohio State -- Lex Wexner (Billionaire)
Texas AM -- Monty Davis (Billionaire)
Baylor -- Drayton McClain (Billionaire)
Stanford -- John Arrillaga (Billionaire)
USC -- B Wayne Hughes (Billionaire)
Notre Dame -- Jay Jordan (Billionaire)
South Carolina -- Joe Rice (Billionaire)

And let's not forget Saban's wallet at Alabama -- Paul Bryant Jr. (Billionaire)

If you’ve seen what’s happening at Texas, a group of boosters has started a non profit that will pay every football player $100,000 plus an extra $50,000 for offensive linemen.

The transfer portal is a joke and the NCAA made it worse by giving players an extra year when many of them never missed anything due to Covid. I’ve seen things about 6th and 7th year players. Ridiculous.

That issue will go away soon. The extra year was just Covid related and doesn’t have an impact on the last two recruiting classes iirc

If the Ivy League schools cared as much about football as they did way back in the day, they would certainly have more $$$$$ than any other athletic conference to "buy" their way into a national championship.

The covid year has impacted last years class through the next 3 if kids take their Covid year. If you were a true freshman last year - you were a freshman again this year. So the reality is a kid in a program 3 years can be a Red Shirt Freshman. 3 years in.

It has impacted the past 2 recruiting classes. Every school in the country is bringing in re-treads instead of developing their own talent. Quitting has become the popular thing to do.

Oh I absolutely agree I’m just saying the extra Covid year won’t be around forever.

it will be a ripple effect & will take 3-4 years to finish. the transfer portal is a completely different animal that will forever impact recruiting

Wait'll Stanford decides to ease on their academics (which are already very tough) and they'll be a powerhouse.
I'd like to see Alabama get into a bidding war for a player with half a brain and Stanford just lists their academic statistics which bury Bama's.

The federal & state governments need to start taxing these kids that are getting paid. It should include not only the amount they are getting for NIL plus their scholarship amounts which should be valued at what all the other students have to pay for room, board and tuitions. This would bring some balance back into the system especially for those schools that are not so expensive to attend.

I’m sure it’s not tax free, the government is always going to get its piece.

We need an AD with big money ties who can call up friends from Silicon Valley, ya know?

We got a school president who can get us such a guy.
