SHR: Knight commission recommends FBS split

Very interesting read... The Knight Commission has spent the last two years looking into how to reform college athletics under a model that works for football (which makes tons of money) and all the other sports as the divide continues to grow.

Their recommendation? - Cap the FBS with the amount of teams it has now and split from the NCAA. Create a new governing body to cover FBS football only and leave everything else alone under the current NCAA model (NCAA basketball tournament, lower divisions of football, included).

Basically, it sounds like the government is going to step in and make this happen at some point, if the NCAA doesn't figure a way to do it amicably in the very near future.

Capping membership in I-A (or whatever they want to call it) is a clear anti-trust violation. Say some fast growing state, or fast growing religion, has a university that wants to play I-A football, they get a letter saying, sorry, you had to be I-A in 2020 to ever be. Even though the school might have 100 fans for every one some MACer has, or 100 students for every one some grandfathered private school has. Open and shut anti-trust.

The rest of it just seems like the football schools want a pay-the-players scheme that is more generous than the pay-the-players scheme the NCAA is proposing, and that they think (they cannot) avoid the Title IX problem that causes by forming a separate organization. This is the so-called "name and image" scheme. Pay-the-players will DESTROY college sports. Not only because of Title IX, but the gross differences in potential revenues between 15 or so top programs and everybody else. MU might hook up a player with a $50 deal to endorse Dutch Miller, while schools like Texas will have million dollar no work deals.
