Or will the Herd be out? Does the outcome of the next two pod games have any meaning?

Top 12 teams make the tournament. As for the pods, if for example, the Herd were playing in Pod 1, with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams, and the Herd entered the pod games as the 4th place team, even if they lost every game, and theoretically finished with a worst record than say, a team in Pod 2, who may have been in 5th place, the Herd would be seeded no lower than 4th place in the tournament. So, the Herd is in the tournament. It's the teams playing in Pod 3 that are playing for their lives.

Just to qualify my post above, that's how I think the pod system works. I think it's silly though. If I can recall, it was to give the top notch teams in C-USA additional opportunities for quality wins, in hopes of increasing their tournament chances. I'm not sure how you get a quality win over the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place teams out of CUSA, but I think it goes back to the year MTSU had a great regular season record, but lost in the conference tournament, and didn't get an at-large bid. Or maybe it was WKU. Either way, like this year, like last year, and like previous years, C-USA is typically going to be a one bid conference. The suits picking teams in some far away conference room likely won't be impressed by North Texas beating the likes of Charlotte, Louisiana Tech, and WKU down the stretch, nor should they.

It is time to understand that this pod idiocy does not work. The idea was to increase the seeding by have the better teams play one another at the end. Last year, ODU, conference regular season and tournament champion was seeded 14th. This year the “bracketology” columns project exactly the same. 14th, should UNT win out.

Contrast to seeds of 13th, 12th, 15th, 14th, and 13th without pods in the post-Memphis era. The pods complicate travel, make it more expensive, complicate TV schedules, and keep fans from planning ahead.

For nothing.

CUSA is a low mid-major league, one step above, maybe a half step, above the kidding themselves by being in DI bus-and-gym leagues. The idiotic pod system has not changed that.

Meech - very good. One correction - if in pod 1, the worst we would be seeded is 5th.

This stuff will never work because of the bias against mid-major conferences - losses to each other are treated as bad losses, regardless of each teams respective quality. Having top teams playing each other just ensures top teams get losses that eliminate them from being top teams.

Marshall has been safely in the conference tournament for a couple of weeks now.

You realize... basically finished one game out of Pod 1, right?

Playing for the 6 seed when picked 11th. It’s an attainable goal. Upper half of the league in a rebuild year is ok, but really means more if the team takes the big leap forward next year we are all hoping for.

From a discussion over @ CUSABBS:

After the Thursday 2.27 games, including the overtime WKU/LT game, this is how the bracket would look if the tourney started today. *Using Standings from CUSA website

8. Old Dominion
9. Florida Atlantic
Winner plays 1. North Texas

5. Florida International
12. Rice
Winner Plays 4. Charlotte

7. UAB
10. UTSA
Winner plays 2. Western Kentucky

6. Marshall
11. Southern Miss
Winner plays 3. Louisiana Tech

I would think we may slip to 7th....

As of now. UAB has the tie breaker over us. They would be 6th. We are also tied with FAU and they too hold a tie breaker so we are at the moment the 8th seed.
IF we win out and UAB loses one game, they at at UTSA and home to ODU, we would be the 6 seed

.....A couple of pod2 games today. Our next opponent (FAU) visits ODU. Also, our last opponent (UAB) visits UTSA. Dogfights. Look for the road teams to win today.

ODU surprises FAU in OT. UNT holds serve vs WKY (0-3 in pod play). FIU whips UNCC on the road. Battle for the 4 seed getting pretty intense! Our game Weds vs FAU is their last game before the tournament. UAB loses late after J Jackson explodes in SanAntone...

Got to beat FAU in the CAM Wednesday night. Then go to San Antonio Saturday and hope that Jackson and his gunslinger back court mate don't go off offensively. If our offense can get going, and we don't play a loose half-hearted man to man D, a win at UTSA is not unattainable, IMO!

FAU just flew up & back to VA on Sat-Sun. Short turnaround and they have to fly to WV today & play us Weds nite. I like our chances...

They arrived in town at 6:30 pm yesterday from Norfolk and practiced in the Cam. They practice again there today
