enough politics let's talk about the eclipse. Anyone actually care? Anyone else lucky enough to be in the path of totality? Or am I the only one geeking out

Making lye soap is more exciting.
You sir are a moron. I understand if astronomy isnt your thing but a total solar eclipse for most people is a once in a lifetime event, not a weekend hobby. It was one of the most awe inspiring, unusual things I have ever seen.

It's a big deal to some, for others it's of less importance than green leaves appearing in the spring. I'm of the latter.

Big day for the "earth" type people. Probably a "religious " experience.

It was a religious type experience for many ancient cultures. What is really fascinating is how accurately the Mayans predicted these events. They had such accurate record keeping over centuries that their measurements could be used to predict future eclipses. The sad part is that the Spanish believed that the records were blasphemous and they destroyed almost all of their books and records. One of the few to survive was the Dresden Codex. These records were used by scholars in the 1980s to predict the next eclipse in the Mayan area of Mexico and Central America and accurately predicted an eclipse in the 1990s. That's pretty cool stuff. I wonder how much of this kind of stuff was destroyed during the Spanish Inquisition?

A shadow was awe inspiring? What are you people, Mayans?

Not the shadow dipshit, the solar corona, watching my 4.5 year old look on in amazement.
First off, your kid is 4. If you're going to get into decimals, why stop at the tenth? If you say it doesn't matter, you're right. They're 4.

And second, I didn't realize we were talking about the Corona. Holy shit, man. The corona. Well this changes everything. Man, a corona. I can't imagine how stoked you get for sunrises & sunsets.

Personally I like my Corona with a lime.

Not as spectualar here in panama city. I told my grandson, everything is better at home. Lol. Off to ride the speed cars

But in all seriousness...I like this kind of stuff. The universe is so awe inspiring to me. Of course it's easy to ridicule someone's fascination, because if you view it from a physical perspective, making flying bird shadows on the wall with your hands in front of a lamp is basically the same concept. But if you're religious, I think the beauty in these celestial events is how a grand designer could put in motion all the solar systems, galaxies, and the entirety of creation? From a purely scientific standpoint like I look at it, this event represents the totality of all the physical laws of the universe. It is humanity's simple glance at a single frame of a 14 billion year show.

At the risk of being ridiculed for finding what some of you view as nothing more than an object casting a shadow as awe inspiring...well...I'll take that risk and live with the results.

The eclipse was about the 20th most exciting thing to happen to me today. Somewhere between the deuce I dropped and watching the grass grow around a ant hill in the yard. Those damn ants are resilient little bastards

Ok that was my character answer. I saw it at the coast. It was cool. Birds freaked out. And it was a strange sight for sure.

Here in Columbia SC it was an amazing to watch especially the when the carona appeared. We ( Columbia ) were in a direct line , had clear skies and were able to watch from beginning to end without any interruptions due to cloud cover.

We made a party out of it at St. Peters Catholic church , confession at 11 for those that thought the end of the world was going to take place , mass at noon followed by a pot luck lunch and then viewing of the eclipse.

This is a little sad

Refresh my memory. Was their not a great indian leader who knew of the eclipse before hand and was made to look Godlike when it happened.

so how disappointed were the those that hit the confession booth? can only imagine, "forgive me father, for I have sinned, i fvcked a goat".

No, but I have had a total eclipse of the heart.
First of all that joke hadn't been made at all on Monday so Way to be original. Secondly as raoul stated above go see a total solar eclipse. It something you won't forget. I get the "oh it's just a shadow" crowd with partials but there is nothing that compares to totality

I was too busy working at the medical center to go outside and be a spectator, nor was I really all that interested in seeing it anyway.

Everyone has things they're passionate about. Clearly, the eclipse is your thing. Good for you. I don't give a shit about it. What caused you to get your balls busted about it all was how you spoke of it like it was some ex-girlfriend who you're still bitter about losing, and if someone dare speak of her in a negative tone, that's when you lose your shit.
