I posted this on the paid board, and nobody seemed concerned about it, but it's a huge sign of incompetence.
In yesterday's game, right before the half, there was an overturned call on what was originally ruled a long completion for Southern Miss. The receiver "caught" the ball and was ruled down at 2:38. The clock continued to run (no stopping after a first down anymore unless final two minutes of the half). At 2:14 left on the clock, before the next play was snapped, the refs stopped the game to review.
The play was overturned and ruled an incompletion. Southern Miss then went back to facing a third-and-forever deep in their territory, but the clock remained at 2:14. Due to the call being overturned, the clock should have stopped on the incompletion and not continued to roll down to 2:14. Southern Miss should have snapped the ball on third down at 2:38, but they did it at 2:14. It's bad enough that the refs didn't notice this. It's even worse that Marshall has a full staff who didn't say anything about it. Those 24 seconds could be huge when getting the ball back before the half with that little time on the clock.
It may seen like a fairly little thing, but it is a major miss by Marshall. It shows that they simply don't have a good head of a head coach on their staff. And that isn't necessarily a knock on Huff. Some coaches just don't have the ability to focus on those things. Good head coaches identify their faults and make sure another staff member who is better at that task helps. Clearly, that isn't the case at Marshall.
I've defended Huff and this staff a lot. But this is inexcusable for Huff and nobody on the staff to identify this. It's also a miss by reporters not to ask about this particular scenario and how the entire Marshall staff missed it.
That got me thinking about potential staff changes if Huff is retained. Adam Fuller was just released at Florida State and has a good track record. Not sure he'd be willing to drop down to Marshall nor does he have the same relationships on this staff, but it's an opportunity. Also, ECU isn't retaining their head coach. Their first-year OC has significant experience working with Doege. I mentioned this in a post a few months ago where I said not to be surprised if the ECU OC or another coach who has worked with those two a lot ends up linking back up with Doege. If Marshall loses a coach on offense, look for John David Baker or Graham Harrell to join the staff. Both of those coaches have had far bigger titles at bigger schools, so it may be a stretch to think they'd take a position coach spot at Marshall, but if they don't get hired on elsewhere, there is a chance.
