Stephen Hawking RIP

Question: Does Hawking's work place him in the same pantheon of great minds like Da Vinci, Aristotle, Tesla, Einstein, etc. or is he a rung below those persons?

Imho, I think he belongs in the same category.

Thoughts?

I think he belongs in the same category. He held the position of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge which was the same position held by Newton in the 1600s. His work on black holes created a paradigm shift of how we view the universe. Hawking Radiation shifted how we view gravity. I'm thinking the order in physics should be Newton-Einstein-Hawking. I do believe that Hawking was the lesser of those three with Einstein the greatest.

Someone explain to me what's going on with his last words. I'm seeing some stuff but I'm at school and can't sort through it. Rox, your post just shows a blocked Windows message.

It's the windows shutdown sequence.

Hawking had a great sense of humor. I’m sure he would have appreciated that.

On Late Night TV

John Oliver, the host of “Last Week Tonight”: “You’ve stated that there could be an infinite number of parallel universes. Does that mean there’s a universe out there where I am smarter than you?”

Hawking: “Yes. And also a universe where you’re funny.”

OK, really what the hell did he do that was so important? He met his maker just like the rest of us will.

His work on the mechanics of black holes and most notably that black holes aren't infinite and that they actually emit particles (Hawking Radiation) and at some point they will evaporate. This gave us the basis for better understanding much more about the very early stages of the formation of the universe.

Ok, well, how do we know that is true.

You lost Herdman right after the word “black”

Oh, stop with your nonsense. Hawking was one of the brightest minds the modern world has known. You using illogical, fantasy-land stories as an attempt to claim he was wrong about a topic is a slap in the face to human intelligence as a whole.

I understand that the unknown has you scared and apprehensive. I’ve prayed for you specifically for several years.

It's the complete opposite of that, oh brainwashed one.

Being completely sure and comfortable knowing that all forms of life cease after death allows me to do many things your kind can't. I can fully enjoy life knowing there is no after-life. I appreciate things more knowing my time here is all that there is. I don't waste time in false hope or begging a superhero in the clouds for things. I don't put my faith in Marvel movies or the Bible, so I am able to accomplish more knowing that there isn't some mysterious hand that is going to help things get done.

It's those of you who are sure there is an after-life that are scared. You're scared that your actions or beliefs will determine your eternal soul for eternity. I don't have that fear. Your apprehension about what your god wants you to do (hell, look at all of the fighting between Christians on this board regarding which is the right or wrong thing to do) doesn't allow you to fully enjoy life.

Please, for everyone's sake, stop wasting your time praying for me. Take that time and spend it volunteering at a youth center or children's home. It is far more rewarding for everyone involved.

You know no such thing.

I can fully enjoy life knowing there is no after-life

No, you can't.

I appreciate things more knowing my time here is all that there is.

Nope.

I don't waste time in false hope or begging a superhero in the clouds for things.

You waste your time trying to convince people of something you don't know.
