Steve Spurrier retiring, effective immediately

Honestly saw it coming, if not midseason at least during bowl season.
I just can't believe he was at SC for nearly 10 full seasons.

Agree with SamC. Unfortunately, Spurrier's ego is so great, he probably couldn't stomach a losing season.

Add South Carolina to the list of school I am worried Doc would leave for

Maryland and South Carolina

I was just browsing around Gamecockcentral.com. Many threads on the topic of potential new coaches. Not a one of them that I saw mention Doc. They are hoping for a big name coach, i.e. Chip Kelly. Heck, I even saw Rich Rod's name mentioned. Would Doc be a good coach there? I think so, but I don't see him being on their radar, at least right now. He's certainly not on the mind of their fanbase.

the issue with kelly, rich, etc, is that south carolina just isn't that good of a job. if chip kelly left the eagles, he'd have the usc, oregon, or even possibly texas job. rich rod makes as much at arizona (where his daughter is a cheerleader) than south carolina could pay him (he has a huge pay day ahead of him if he stays a few more years), etc.

South Carolina scares me the most

Doc knows Florida, he knows good coaches and has made inroads here within the States of Georgia and South Carolina. And it is the SEC

Age seems to be a big concern for a majority of South Carolina's fans. After Spurrier and Holtz, I have a feeling they may go younger this time.

If I were Western Kentucky I would be very nervous, because I think Jeff Brohm could be a real serious candidate for South Carolina, Maryland or other HC jobs that will come open as the season progresses..

In addition to Jeff Brohm, It also seems that in most of the articles I've read, that the hot coaches list this year seems to center are these early favorites :

Head Coaches:

Matt Campbell - Toledo
Justin Feuente - Memphis
Tom Herman - Houston
Kyle Whittingham - Utah

Assistant Coach:

Kirby Smart - Alabama (he seems to be mentioned every time there is a high profile opening).

I have yet to see Doc's name mentioned like last year, but that doesn't mean anything. AD's know the fine work he has done here. He has rebuilt a proud program, now he's in the maintenance phase of his coaching job here, which can be at times much tougher than rebuilding. My thought is if Marshall can manage to keep Doc over the next 1 - 3 years, then there is a pretty good chance he might end up finishing his career at Marshall..

That's the current list..........Be very happy with several of the above.

Hated to see Spurrier go out like this. He was an amazing coach for USC.

When we watched his post game press conference (LSU), my son and I both said, "He's done."

Surprised that it was immediate but not at all shocked he retired.

well normally I would come to the defense of Doc, but I hope he gets overlooked again for selfish reasons!

I've aways been a huge Spurrier fan from my elementary school days growing up in Gainesville. My dad got his Doctorate degree at U of F when Spurrier was a player there and then taught there for a few years afterwards... So I've always been a Gators fan, but even more so a Spurrier fan. It also helped that I've always liked the Gamecocks, partly because they always seemed to be the underdog pre Holtz and Spurrier (yet their fan base was always so passionate) and later on because my wife's family are huge Clemson fans, with her Dad and Uncle having gone there, so someone had to be the voice of reason in the family.

Both my kids go to Carolina........Game day in Columbia is an unbelievable experience. Those folks really know how to tailgate and Sandstorm prior to each kick-off is one of the best cheers in college football. 2001 is a pretty good entrance too.

My wife graduated from Carolina, so I have some skin in this game. I'm a Carolina fan by proxy. I do get some enjoyment over hanging our 98 victory over her head every once in a while, however.

Feuente, Smart and Herman are getting the most play right now. Smart has actually mentioned in the past that South Carolina would be somewhere he'd like to go. Everyone wants D'Antonio because he went to Carolina, but he has heart issues and would be crazy to leave the awesome situation he has in East Lansing.

I am surprised Doc isn't getting any mentions, but I hope that he continues to fly under the radar. Like everyone else, I kinda like the direction we're headed in with Doc at the helm.

No one is being mentioned as of this time per the press conference held at noon today. Hell Tanner ( the AD) stated that if he had a list it wouldnt be in his desk drawer due to someone finding it..lol...think this to some degree took many by surprise however the AD did mention that a few weeks ago at 2-2 SOS had indicated that if things did not change this (resignation) was well in the picture in all fairness to the school.

Keep in mind Spurrier was 59 when he came to South Carolina , Doc is 58..in all likelihood South Carolina will go for someone a few years younger. Then again with Doc's connections to Florida as well as Georgia who knows..but winning at the CUSA level is not in all likelihood going to garner the attention he would receive if Marshall were in a better confernce...might , but somewhat doubtful. Would be more concerned about him eventually returning to WVU than losing him to South Carolina.

Around here most ( with 3 Carolina grads in our family) are just happy this is over and he has realized it was time to step down , plus by doing so he saved the university from having to pay the additional years on his contract.

Would like to see Doc in the mix , would be good publicity for Marshall for sure but just don't think this is where South Carolina will look..best thing going is for Marshall to make sure he stays put.

He was very clear. He RESIGNED, he did not RETIRE. He left an opening to get back into coaching.

Well, I just found the first mention of Doc for the South Carolina job. In fact, he's the first one mentioned, although I don't think the list was compiled in order of likelihood or anything like that:

" Doc Holliday: He has done an incredible job at Marshall (28-6 the last 2 1/2 years), runs a fast-paced offense, has worked in the SEC (associate head coach at Florida from 2005-07) and has a unique recruiting niche in South Florida. If you can get good players out of Miami to come to a Conference USA school in West Virginia, you can get even better players to come to South Carolina."

USA Today talking about Doc for the job...

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...arolina-football-job-steve-spurrier/73948744/

With that in mind, here are some candidates who make sense for South Carolina:

Sounds like the same article, just different source. Glad he's getting the mentions, but I do not want to lose Doc. The consolation for me is that my wife and in-laws would be happy.

It's going to be a long list of candidates at Carolina. Kirby Smart will be near the top.......I don't see Doc as a top target at South Carolina.

Maryland and Miami concern me a bit...........However, Maryland's facilities suck, it's a difficult school academically and I don't see the commitment towards football.

If Miami comes open, that could be a problem.

I personally think Doc would be insane to take that job. Boosters chew you up and spit you out there.

I'm not saying he would or should take the Miami job.......But I think he'd be on the short list. I'm not sure people realize how highly respected Doc is in Florida.

I can see him "coaching" one of his Grandsons in High School or possibly "consulting" if Jr. gets a head coaching gig at some point. He is very well respected within his coaching tree and might get involved with some of them.

Keep his hands in football and play a lot of golf......Dream scenario for the Ole Ball Coach.
