Not to discredit the soccer team from their accomplishment, but it has to be Merrick. We went from recruiting kids that never played football to a national champion. Our soccer roster is composed of studs from literally all across the globe.
Both kicks resulted in National Championships. Can’t ask for more than that.
Have to agree on Merrick. The fact that he had never kicked a FG in a MU game, let alone for the natty…..but Roberts Golden goal was pretty damn special!! What really impressed me: this futbol team embodies their HC like none other!!
I think you stated it perfectly. Not only did Herd football return from almost cancelling the program to a championship, but the soccer team as you noted had talented recruits from all over the globe. They were cherry picked for success.

We were dominating football at 1-AA when we won and had even been to the championship I believe the year before. In soccer this was the end to a run we may never get to see again.

I was on the sideline with the Merrick kick as an equipment manager and it’s not to discredit what he did and was an unbelievable achievement however I have to go with the soccer goal because it’s the first division 1 championship in any sport for Marshall University!!
