A woman could face prison for posters that show a famed icon of Jesus and the Virgin Mary with rainbow halos

(CNN)Polish police say Elżbieta Podlesna put up posters of the revered Black Madonna that showed the Virgin Mary and Jesus with rainbows from the LGBT flag as the halos. Now she could face two years in prison for offending religious feelings.

Police claim that Podlesna, 51, put up the posters in the small city of Płock, Poland. And they say they found even more posters when they searched her car and home.
Podlesna was detained by authorities as she returned from an Amnesty International advocacy tour.
As a result of the searches, prosecutors are charging her with offending religious feelings. And those charges mean Podlesna faces up to two years in prison if found guilty.
CNN is identifying Podlesna because she has agreed to reveal her name to the media. Normally under Polish law, it is illegal to report the name of a suspect until the trial is over.

Her lawyer, Radoslaw Baszuk, tells CNN they plan on fighting the charges in court. He says that the way in which these paintings were presented, they didn't publicly insult or desecrate a religious image.
"[She] has not admitted to committing the crime," her lawyer, Radoslaw Baszuk, tells CNN. "That does not mean that she did not deny participation in this event."
But police say they're just applying the law like they've done in previous incidents.

The poster has drawn fierce opposition across Poland, where the depiction of the Virgin Mary and Jesus is iconic and revered by Catholics. The Black Madonna resides in the Jasna Góra monastery, one of the holiest shrines in Poland.
"No whim of freedom and 'tolerance' gives anyone the right to offend the feelings of believers," Polish Interior Minister Joachim Brudziński said on Twitter.
Amnesty International says Podlesna was detained for her "peaceful activism."
"Restricting activists from freely expressing their views in the country is unlawful and must stop immediately," the organization said in a statement.

I was reading that this morning.

Even with its flaws, our Constitution is a great thing.

ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT FREEDOM OF SPEECH THING?

The White House revoked my press pass. It’s not just me — it’s curtailing access for all journalists.
I’m not the only one. I was part of a mass purge of “hard pass” holders after the White House implemented a new standard that designated as unqualified almost the entire White House press corps, including all six of The Post’s White House correspondents. White House officials then chose which journalists would be granted “exceptions.” It did this over objections from news organizations and the White House Correspondents’ Association.

I strongly suspect it’s because I’m a Trump critic. The move is perfectly in line with Trump’s banning of certain news organizations, including The Post, from his campaign events andhis threatsto revoke White House credentials of journalists he doesn’t like.

White House officials provided me no comment for the record.

I’m not looking for pity. Trump’s elimination of briefings and other changes have devalued White House coverage anyway. But there’s something wrong with a president having the power to decide which journalists can cover him.

Now, virtually the entire White House press corps is credentialed under “exceptions,” which means, in a sense, that they all serve at the pleasure of press secretary Sarah Sanders because they all fail to meet credentialing requirements — and therefore, in theory, can have their credentials revoked any time they annoy Trump or his aides, like CNN’sJim Acosta did.

More important is that the White House is drastically curtailing access for all journalists. Briefings have been abolished in favor of unscheduled “gaggles” ( on the record, but impromptu and haphazard) in the White House driveway. The Pentagon and State Department have done similarly.

Donald Trump Is a Dangerous Demagogue. It’s Time for a Crusading Press to Fight Back.

Hermann Ullstein’s criticism of the mainstream press of the pre-Nazi era would sound eerily familiar to anyone following the American media today as it tries to confront Donald Trump.

When Adolf Hitler came to power, after the Nazis had shut down all of Germany’s independent newspapers and magazines and ended press freedom in the country, Hermann Ullstein, a member of a highly regarded German publishing family, fled to New York and wrote a penetrating memoir of the rise and fall of his family’s media empire.

But when Hitler stole their press holdings, Hermann Ullstein and other family members fled, and by World War II, the Ullstein presses were being used to print Das Reich, a newspaper created by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.
