Thanks FIU!*

I had to check and see if Mark Snyder was FIU's coach. Going for two down 14-9? Having a costly personal foul to line UCF up for the game-winning field goal? As happy as I am UCF lost, I have to feel like they just got a piece of the luck we were always missing.

why is going for 2 the wrong call there? it's a game where the offense had struggled to point up points, so yeah, there's a lot of time left, but you'd scored 9 points in almost 2 1/2 quarters, cutting it to a field goal game makes some sense.

I agree. Seldom should you go for two with a game that close in the 3rd period. I commented last night that it was way too early. If they get one point for both failed two point conversions last night UCF would be lining up to tie the game on their last field goal...not win it. FIU caught a break with the offside that pushed the kick from 42 to 47 yards and the blocked kick that followed. (Could the lower trajectory on the longer kick aided in it getting blocked?) But I'll take the win.

The issue is that, with so much time remaining, the liklihood that a successful 2pt conversion would make a major difference in the game was actually less than the risk that failing to convert would change the way FIU had to play the remainder of the game.

This wound up being the case, with FIU failing its 2pt try, necessitating that they go for 2 after their next TD, which they also failed. This opened the door for UCF to win on its final drive with only a FG. Had they just kicked extra points on their TDs, a UCF field goal would have only tied the game and forced overtime.

Things worked out in the end, thanks to a little luck, but that's what the term "chasing points" means - once you start, it changes the way you have to play, forcing you to incur additional risk if you fail.

The theory is you don't risk taking points off the board at that point in the game. Because odds are you kicking one more fg to tie won't be the deciding factor in the game. They almost lost because of it. Worst case it shoulda been a fg attempt to force OT.
