They're going to wait till after round to see if DJ has 1 stroke penalty?

I mean...they could actually determine a major in a tent somewhere?

The more I think about this the worse it is. You have to make the decision before these players finish so they know how to play final holes. Makes no sense.

Reactions: Raoul Duke MU
Dustin Johnson addressed putt on number 5. He was doing warm up strokes and then got ready to putt and ball rolled very slightly. Rules official was called and determined he didn't cause movement or hadn't ground club. On hole 12 officials come up and say he might of caused movement so they want to review with him ...AFTER the round. So now DJ is playing not knowing whether he will be assessed penalty or not. It could possibly be determined in tent after everyone is done. McIlroy and Spieth are tweeting that it is ridiculous and he shouldn't be assessed. Drama.

This reinforces my (perhaps unjustified) perception of the USGA: the USGA makes sure the US Open is all about the USGA.

To DJ's credit, he didn't let it seem to rattle him (while the rest of the field fell away).

USGA just announced they ARE assessing a one-stroke penalty, so that DJ finishes -4 instead of -5.

FARCE.

The USGA is going to (or at the very least should) catch about seven types of hell over this. Morons.

The very fact that they waited till the end reinforces your opinion. It turns out it didn't matter but it easily could have. If it was a penalty and he did in fact ground his club or caused the ball to move then there was nothing to be gained by getting DJs opinion. That should have been decided and enforced on the course. What a shame it would have been if they came down to one stroke for victory or playoff and it didn't resolve itself on the course where it needs to be.

In some ways, you could understand a couple of the contenders that were playing contemporaneously to DJ being a bit hacked-off by this ruling. For the sake of argument, if the penalty was assessed at the time of the alleged infraction, DJ is playing 18 at -3 with only a two stroke cushion. Strategy changes; pressure is different.

USGA bungles something else at the US Open (again).

You cannot set up the greens at a place like Oakmont to run at 13-14 on the Stimp -- the greens are too bumpy and lumpy for that type of speed and keeping a ball in its spot is a challenge.

Since I've been watching golf (dating back to the 1990 US Open), I can (probably) count on one hand the number of times I thought the US Open set-up was correct and a fair challenge, as opposed to the clowns-mouth windmill circus type stuff the USGA leans towards.

THE USGA damn neared ruined Pinehurst #2 a couple of years ago. It was beyond stupid.

I never understood the protecting par argument. The course for a major should be set up hard but should be fair. Then, let the best players in the world compete and settle it on the course. It almost reminds me of an umpire in baseball that wants to be a part of the game.

Ck out the BBC's article on the issue as well as comments from McIlroy and Spieth

In the end it made no difference especially the way DJ played the 18th to cushion the margin penalty or no penalty.

Regular tour event this would have been a non issue , USGA involved..just about had to convene the Supreme Court...where is Judge Smails when you need him.
