A lot of Marshall sports fans
are understandably anxious
about conference
realignment. No decision has
been made and discussions
about our future are ongoing. I
can confidently say that the
timing of our decision won't
impact which conference we
choose. #GoHerd

If MU ends up staying in f**king CUSA, Judy either knows witchcraft or has some serious dirt on the higher ups of the university.
There is absolutely no reason to be a part of this sh!t show and mockery of college football.

I'm not sure what else he's supposed to say. I would be very surprised if this isn't totally opposite of his tweet. Sounds like one of these coaches denying they are leaving when in fact they are. I have always expected a news conference to be scheduled for tomorrow or Monday to announce the move after Brad Smith is named President today. Hope I'm not wrong......

He his supposed to call the president of the SBC and say, “sir, where do I sign?”

Get it done, before something happens and they move on.

relax sam. the adults are handling it. just hang here with us at the kids table.

Looks like President Gilbert is stepping down at the end of December to take on another roll until his official end date of June.

Sorry but if I was the Sun Belt I would pull my invite and chose say Wku or Mtsu because I( Sunbelt) have tv deals and other more important thangs to do then to wait on Marshall University to say YES. There are other Universities out there that WILL give the Sunbelt a answer in a timely matter. But Marshall University has to make a dog and pony show out of everything. This is why Marshall is broke not one person can do there job without the BOG fing it up or holding it up because someone feels they need a pat on the back. This is a shit show at the end of the day.

Regardless, this is going to make the SBC NOT like MU...I mean, looking down on us and it's entirely MU's fault.

In the MAC, those loser wannabe Ivy Leaguers disliked some school in WV making all of them look bad and carried the conference.

CUSA was Texas based, thus everyone minus Texas schools were mistreated and Judy is just an idiot.

Now, The SBC actually extended a generous offer, their social media accounts have been welcoming for MU since the rumors began, their fans are all for it as well.

...and what is the MU BoG doing?? Absolutely nothing and actually treating this ridiculously easy and obvious choice like it really is something to consider.

It's a damn insult to the SBC and this MU BoG are screwing this up.

EXCELLENT POST.

It appears that either the “done deal” chorus, both here and in the media, were either dead wrong, or the chairman of the BOG is lying.

MU is a more attractive candidate than some others. But not so much more that the SBC is going to wait around while we dither about a no-brainer decision.

Left behind.

well, let's hope the Sunbelt, along with the two Virginia schools that are joining, are a tad more thoughtful and measured in their decision making.

you guys are funny

We're not holding the SBC back from anything. Even with announcements nothing is changing until July 1 2023 and really who knows what they landscape is going to look like by then.

No the only thing Marshall is doing is making itself look foolish.

As some ODU fans said yesterday. They weren't leaving unless Marshall was too. We've already told he SBC what we're doing. For some reason our administration wants to make it a dog and pony show.

For some reason our administration wants to make it a dog and pony show.
Hopefully. I truly hope you are right. If so, yes, we look foolish and undisciplined. Again

The other possibilities?

- This crew has made some sort of demand, maybe about money, scheduling, soccer, women’s issues, something, and that has the SBC having second thoughts.

- The “Big” 12 expansion rumors are true, and this crew thinks we can, and should join the remnant AAC.

- We are playing both sides against the middle, in some kind of talks with either Judy’s leftovers or with the lowly MAC.

- (most likely) The BOG (notice a certain last name?) is split and either we don’t have the votes or at least don’t want to look divided in public.

Again, I hope you are right. How much better to just get things done. Whether its you homework, putting out the trash, or conference realignment, just get it done and then you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

The Big 12 rumors could throw an amazing turn of events into this thing, but seems like that will/would take longer and the SBC may not wait on us. The MAC's definitely falling to the lower D1 tier. Along with CUSA. It either the simple decision to go SB, or somehow pull a series of strings and beg the American for consideration. Stranger things have happened. Remember that approx. half of the American is former CUSA. In some ways, we may be the deciding factor over which nonP5 conference gets to be #6? Or at least pretends to be.

Could this be a mutual position between Marshall and the SBC? Could the SBC be working on certain contracts behind the scenes that would be more advantageous for the conference as a whole? Maybe the decision makes are completely inept, I have a feeling they are just feeding us the corporate line and this is much further along than the "sky is falling" posters are claiming.

Nope....no way..... not possible. The experts here have spoken.

Maybe there could be a Memorandum of Understanding or Letter of Good Faith, behind the scenes that says once we get a President in place, BOG votes, etc. we will join the conference. I think it is still going to happen.

Dude if you read what I have been telling you for days and days... the deal is done! We will be in the SunBelt.

I swear reading comprehension is not this difficult, I have literally told you no less than 5 times what conference we will be joining.

SMH!!!

The move requires the signature of the school's president---at least it did with Southern Miss on at least one document. It could be something simple.

Does Sunbelt have decent soccer?
Soccer.

CUSA, as it currently exists, assuming we haven’t blown it, has only one full member that plays soccer, FIU.

The Sun Belt no longer has soccer, but has three teams that play the sport, Coastal Carolina in CUSA, and Georgia Southern and Georgia State in the MAC. The NCAA requires 4 teams to qualify as a conference, Appalachian State dropped soccer after 2019. If the two Georgias return home (I assume that is required) that leaves the MAC at the 4 team minimum.

Newcomer to SBC ODU has soccer; theoretical newcomer MU is the defending national champions. Theoretical newcomer James Madison has soccer

CUSA has two “associate” members for soccer, because the SEC doesn’t play it. Kentucky and South Carolina. WVU, currently in the MAC, was scheduled to join next year. A theoretical SBC would be superior to the MAC, and to a new CUSA soccer (UConn, Liberty, FIU, UMass?) so no reason USC and UK would not join. WVU is apparently at our request, so why not?

So, theoretically, (assuming we haven’t blown it) :

Marshall (currently #2, defending national champions, 2 NCAA appearances)
James Madison (currently “also receiving votes”, 17 NCAA appearances)
Coastal Carolina (17 NCAA appearances)
Kentucky (currently #5, 11 NCAA appearances)
South Carolina (22 NCAA appearances)
Georgia Southern
Georgia State (4 NCAA appearances)

To which could be added:
WVU (currently “also receiving votes” , 11 NCAA appearances)
FIU (currently #17, 10 NCAA appearances, 9 Division II appearances, 2 Division II national championship)

Okay... let me just make sure I understand what is going on here. There is a conversation on HerdNation about what the best conference is for Marshall athletics and the sport people seem most concerned about is SOCCER!!!!! Pardon me, but WTF!!!!!!!!!! I know that we have a great soccer program, with a great coach, and a really shiny National Championship trophy from last year. All that is well and good. If our administration is actually stumbling through the decision making process and SOCCER weighs into that decision at all, THE ENTIRE ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION OF MARSHALL UNIVERSITY SHOULD BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY AND BANNED FROM ANY FURTHER AFFILIATION WITH COLLEGE ATHLETICS!!!!

We're talkin' bout soccer! We're talkin' bout soccer... not football... SOCCER! We're talkin about soccer, man! When you turn on your tv to watch the Herd play - do you see soccer... no man, you see football and sometimes basketball. We're talkin about soccer.

Love soccer, but football and basketball drive this bus... and it should be on the way out of C-USA town to Sunbeltville - and SOCCER SHOULD NOT BE A FACTOR IN THE DISCUSSION!!!!!!!!!! We can win 10 national championships in soccer (and I hope we do), but that wont garner 1 drop of the national media attention of playing a single NCAA Basketball Tournament game or being the G5 rep to whatever college football playoff exists. This decision should be about Football, Basketball, and Media Coverage - END OF DISCUSSION!!!! Who gives a rats ass what conference the soccer team plays in - they can still be nationally ranked and compete for the national championship.

Good god dude, shut up. Soccer was brought up maybe twice in the whole thread.
Soccer will be fine wherever it goes. They have the appeal to actually get return calls from top schools to play, and frankly Grassie doesn't seem concerned where MU is, as long as they can play the game.

Nobody said soccer is the thing we are “most concerned” about. Somebody asked a question about soccer, and it got answered. Nothing more, nothing less.

Of course we should take this last seat on the last helicopter out of Kabul, based on football, even if it made basketball, women’s basketball, soccer or whatever unsustainable. It doesn’t really come to that. SBC basketball is another 13ish seed one-bid league, just like CUSA, and soccer is explained.

It comes down to football.

I look forward to playing New Mexico State.

Incompetence.
