To Go Fee?

I've seen it all. Next to my gym is a pizza/pub joint. They have pizza, pasta, sandwiches, etc. While working out, I decided to call and place an order for two pizzas for takeout. When I arrived to sign the receipt, I saw they charged me $2 for a "takeout fee."

Are you fvcking kidding me? You're charging me to come give your company business? When I questioned it, I was told that "It's for the plastic utensils we give you." I countered with "You have given me two pizzas. I haven't received any plastic utensils nor do I need them to eat pizza." At that time, the bartender said that the charge is automatically processed in the computer when he places a takeout order, which I acknowledged was not his fault. He then went on to say that the charge "may be for the cost of the pizza boxes."

Again, are you fvcking kidding me? I come to give your pizza joint business and am charged a fee for coming over to get the food that I paid for? So if I place a delivery order, I get a delivery fee and tip the driver. If I place a takeout order, I am now charged a takeout fee and supposed to tip whomever brings my takeout order?

Eat a dick.

If the price of the pizza was raised by $2 you likely wouldn’t blink. But a $2 takeout fee? I agree...that’s really bad marketing. That would make me mad too. Just charge me more for the pizza and don’t make up some accounting trick and think I’m too stupid to notice.

Damn, I think they're trying to recoup the potential lost sale of the beverage they could nail you on if you dined in?

The owner responded to my Facebook review within five minutes asking for me to call his cell to discuss the issue.

In my review, I inquired that if I had dined in, would I have been charged for using their metal utensils, dishes, requiring dishwashing, a dishwasher fee, and using their napkins. I stated that their $2 “takeout fee” took away the bartender’s tip for the takeout order, so hopefully the staff gets sick of that and goes to a better employer.

I then said it was unethical to not have anything about the mandatory “takeout fee” on the menu, not have a sign about it, and only see it when the card has already been charged and you get the receipt back to sign.

I’m just as annoyed to find out that this is a franchise establishment. It is a local owner, but there are 38 of them in four countries, most of which are in the northwest. I’ve never heard of them.

Some of these damn bean counters at companies overthink stuff like this. GK is right. If they raised their price by $2 nobody would say anything. But, they want to show a line item in their books or ledger that they are paying for or making money on the plastic utensils. I fight this shit with corporate all the time. They want to show line items on the books because they say they are losing money on utensils(example) or a widget. So, they want to show they are recouping that by creating a line item. It is bad PR is what it is. Just raise your damn price if you have to and realize you have a cost of doing business. But, hell no they want to show a line item on the invoices. Then, I have to hear the crap from customers about getting nickle and dimed to death. Guess what? I agree with them.

Can't wait until Monday. Bean counters in cubicles.

I agree, tell them to eat a dick.

I'd tell them to shove the pizza up their ass. Isn't half the idea of carryout that you don't have to pay the bullshit delivery fee AND tip the driver?* It's just a money grab. Fvckers probably charge for a glass of ice water as well...gotta pay for the ice machine!

* I bet if one were to do a study on this, it would be obvious delivery drivers are tipped less when there is a bullshit delivery fee.

I am telling you what this stuff is. Some bean counter or manager somewhere is going "Folks, we are losing $75,000 a year on plastic utensils. I see where we order the plastic utensils and it is costing me $75,000 a year."

So, what do they do? Start charging a line item for it. Instead of saying we should raise the price of every pizza 25 cents they do that to make it a profit center. If they don't do the line item charge the manager is still sitting there going, "This is still costing me $75,000 a year."

Hey dickweed in corporate:

This is $15.51 for 1,000 pieces. Stop gouging your customers.
