TV Note for Saturday

That makes no sense. Why would that contract mandate they can show it on the sub/channel but not in the main affiliate?

My mostly uninformed opinion tells me there's more to this. I think they could show it if they wanted. I'd be interested to hear a more informed opinion than my own.

IMPORTANT VIEWING NOTE FOR Saturday:
WCHS & WVAH TV has announced that Saturday's game at Kent State University will air locally on GetTV (WCHS digital channel 8.2, Suddenlink channel 131, Comcast channel 135). The change was made necessary due to the newly signed contract between ESPN, American Sports Network and the Mid-American Conference. ‪#‎BEHERD‬

Looks like you are SOL if you are on Suddenlink in southern WV as no GetTV to be found among the channels provided.

I've noticed that the DirecTV HD channels like ROOT and others that used to carry the ASN broadcasts aren't showing the games anymore; I don't know but I suspect that is because ESPN is now a partner and showing it / them on ESPN3 (a direct competitor of these other networks).

For anyone who lives in the Charleston and Huntington area and even beyond, if you have a decent indoor antenna you can pick up this station easily. I live in Ona and can get these with no issue with a $30 antenna I bought at Walmart like 6 years ago.

Their tower is in St Albans so your pushing 35 miles to Huntington. It's Probably gonna be a tough get for me in Southpoint, Ohio with an antenna. I'll probably just go to the pub for it.

OK, here goes. (Remember ESPN and ABC are owned by Disney; ASN, WCHS, and WVAH are owned by Sinclair). As I understand it, the MAC does not have a direct contract with ASN. Rather the MAC's contract provides for howmanyever games ESPN wishes on its ESPN channels and the rest are all to be on ESPN3. Then ESPN made a sub-license deal with ASN, selling many of the games that were to be on ESPN3 to ASN. But it provided that ASN cannot take down ABC programming to show this material. So they cannot show this game on the main WCHS in replacement for the ABC game.

In any event, the ABC game is Ohio State. Bluntly they are not going to take down Ohio State for us.

That leaves Fox/WVAH. But Fox has baseball that will, probably, run to past 4 backed up with a 4:30 Big 2, Little 8 game. Again they are not going to take that down for us.

It is on GET TV. Most cable companies have it. If you live within 40 miles of Scott Depot, you can get it with a coat hanger and some wire. The only ones left out are those more than that away who have a dish.

It is still on ESPN3.

GET TV is shown on channel 131 Suddenlink (Charleston). The listing for Saturday (as of last night), does not show there is a game on that channel. I was going to set the DVR but it is just showing their regular programming.

That's what ticks off people like me, greengirl. We have Suddenlink here in Southern WV, Raleigh, Mercer, etc., counties. Yet, for some damn reason, the last time they rearranged, added, etc., their cable stations, we got no GET Tv. Channel 131 is "blank". Oh, yeah, we got a crapload bunch of "whodat" stations no one this side of Pluto has ever heard of, but "GET Tv" was not one of them!! Not being that far from Charleston, no reason why Suddenlink's offerings would not be identical in both locations.

I never heard of GET TV. Just saying.

GET TV is one of the new channels we got when they dropped the good channels. Most of the new ones are unheard of. UP for one.
BTW the game is now showing on the TV Guide listing.

Root Sports is not a direct competitor to ESPN3, in fact ESPN3 is a rather unique entity and has no competitor per se. The MAC/ASN deal is different than the CUSA / ASN deal. ESPN is the primary rights holder for MAC games and the ASN contract with not with the MAC but with ESPN and ESPN3 retains the streaming rights. simple as that. The MAC contract also stipulates a broadcast footprint that does not extend to markets beyond the MAC territory.

dshoe, would that explain why the Ohio game was listed on a Directv Sports channel yet was blacked out? I believe it was scheduled to show on NES alt 1 if I recall correctly. I know I went to look and it was blacked out so I streamed ESPN3 which worked just fine.

Thanks, greengirl. However, we got a lot of those new channels too here in southern WV: Up, Pivot, Blaze, TruTV,, etc., etc. But no GetTV. Still can't understand why Suddenlink 's offerings in one area of WV would not be the same as those in another area of the state not that far away. Oh, well, there's always radio!

Pretty much, Only stipulation is that no ABC affiliate can pre-empt the ABC game in the same window. No other programming is protected.
