No Cato? wow! Head north Cato and show them how good you really are!

He'd be a 180 lb QB in the NFL. No one should be surprised he didn't get drafted.

I posted a while back that he'd be the 20th lightest player in the league, any position at 178 lbs. (including kickers) Hell, the undersized QBs run 200, 210.

Doug Flutie was 5'10 180 coming out of Boston College

That was 3 decades ago. NFL players are significantly bigger now. And remember, though he had some great moments, particularly with the Bills after 7-8 seasons with the Stamps & the Argos, Flutie was not exactly a wild success in either the USFL or the NFL.

As athletes, Flutie was a better athlete than Cato is. Also Flutie was a Rhodes scholar finalist.

Cato can play up north...I don't think he can play in the NFL. There's no shame in that; there are starters in the NFL who would have a very difficult time playing in the CFL.

Please, Cato, play in the CFL. Their game is very well suited to your skill set, and they actually pay you unlike the AFL.

Cato cannot play for those nice Canadians if he doesn't show up for tryouts and that is exactly what happened with Calgary in early March in Tampa,

Fortunately there are open CFL tryouts though mid-May . Edmonton will be in Cincinnati on May 9th, Hamilton is in Buffalo on the same day, Edmonton is in Atlanta on May 16 and BC is in Seattle on the 17th.

Perusing CFL QBs, most are from the US and most of them you don't recognize. Of the names I saw, I immediately recognized some good ones - NIUs Jordan Lynch, CMU QB Dan Lefevour, Brian Brohm from Louisville, Zach Collaros from Cincy, Robert Marve from the U and on the other hand there was that awful Pitt QB named Sunseri.

I never expected Cato to be drafted. And I completely understand he is undersized. But it just shocks me to see that a guy like the QB from Northwestern get drafted. While that guy has the size, does he really have the skills? Cato will never be a starter in the NFL. But it just wows me that someone with his capabilities gets overlooked. Even if he is a practice roster guy. With that said, I really hope someone can talk some sense into him and get him to play in Canada.

Guys take a step back and actually look at Catos skill set. As great as he was for us he was never a skilled qb.

Strongly disagree. He was a skilled QB. He wasn't a polished QB. There is a huge difference.

His arm, contrary to what many people complained about on here with his deep balls, wasn't bad. It wasn't Jeff George, but it was decent enough. He had an ability to successfully throw off balance and without a stable base which can't be coached. Many times, he knew where to go with the ball based on pre-snap reads.

Skilled? Yes. But, not polished. His footwork left a lot to be desired. His ball security was as bad as possible. He tended to lock-in on his primary receiver.

You hit the nail on the head here. Cato's relationship with Shu was a gift and a curse. The timing and connection those two had was amazing and really helped us a lot. However, I think he did lock in on him too much at times the final two years (When Cato had more weapons to work with). I think that will be a big difference with Birdsong. I look for him to evenly distribute the ball more often because he doesn't have that type of bond with any one guy like Cato and Shu had.

Rifle, in my opinion Cato did not throw as well consistently from the pocket during his junior and senior seasons as he did as a sophomore. He made up for that by running a little more and completing passes from outside the pocket.

Do you think Tony Peterson leaving had anything to do with this? I feared Cato would regress with Legg as his QB coach. I feel he DID regress as a QB prospect even though he continued to produce in slightly different ways.

I consider those skills related to playing qb

Good thing herdfan was here to tell us all what HE feels is required to play QB.

Cato was a great college QB. Maybe nothing more than that, but also definitely nothing less. I would take home over a long list of guys who started at big time programs over the last decade; Brady Quinn, Devin Gardner, Jarrett Brown, Everett Golson, Zach Mettinberger, Tyler Wilson, any Pitt QB in the past 20 years.

This is a message board people express their opinions. If you don't like it then don't read. I've stated that Cato was one the all time great marshall QBs. It's not my fault if you haven't seen it.

You are correct I do t think he has great skill at qb that doesn't mean he wasn't a great qb for us. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

I worry about Cato post-football.

I've never rooted more for a Marshall player to make the NFL than Cato for that exact reason. I hope he somehow finds a career in football, or somebody local takes him under their wing.

All those feel-good rags-to-riches pieces from last fall are going to play really poorly on YouTube if he winds up back in Liberty City with nothing to show for his talent. Its a story that's more common in college athletics than people would believe, and a big reason I get irritated when people act like a scholarship has no value, and should be replaced with a short-term cash payout.
