US Open greens and rough

Honestly, that is somewhat of a joke. Do they need to protect Oakmont that bad?

USGA is absurd sometimes. A couple of years ago they dried pinhurst #2 out to the point it was like being in the desert. It was the driest golf course I have ever seen. Now this, just to protect the score or par or whatever they want. I want to see good golf not something like this.

I have mixed emotions herdman. On one hand I agree. On the other hand I enjoy seeing the world's best as humbled and frustrated as me on a golf course.

On another subject, are golf prices coming down in your area? I've played some decent courses the last two weekends for under $30. Last weekend I went to Columbus for the Memorial Tournament Saturday and Sunday and on Friday going up we played Cook's Creek which is on 23 about 10 miles below Columbus. I've been playing it for years. Got on for $28. After we played Jim Cook, John's father got out of his Lincoln in the parking lot and engaged in a half hour conversation with me and a friend of mine. Really nice guy. But anyway...decent course for the money.

Then this weekend I went up to catch a couple of Reds games in Cincy and took in Nicklaus' Grizzly course. It has been the home of several Senior Tournaments (Kroger Classic) and LPGA events. We got on it for $27. Makes me cringe to think I play the crappy local courses for $15-$20 more than that.

I think that there was such a glut of golf course building in the 90s and prices got so expensive that the game has shut out a large segment of the population. Maybe supply and demand is bringing prices down. I know Myrtle has seen many courses shut down for homes and condos. Golf needs to rethink their strategy a little and make the game more assessable to the average Joe.

Prices are actually going back up in certain places in my area. Courses closed for years and now there are not enough in some locations. I spend a lot of time in Myrtle Beach area and tee times are getting harder to get again.the low end courses are going away. I believe over 20 courses have closed in the grand strand area since the mid 90's. They are turning the lower end courses into developments as they can't compete anymore.

I'm going to Hilton Head in July. I've gone on a few golf outings there, but it's been 10-15 years ago. You have any recent experiences there? I've probably played 5 or 6 courses there, but it's been so long ago I don't remember much. I never played Harbour Town though. Just wonder what to expect.

Saw this on reddit:

"The Masters is about how hard tradition can make it, US Open is all about how hard man can make, British Open is how hard God can make it, and the PGA is about how hard the players make it."

We vacation in Hilton Head and just got back about a week ago.

I've played Harbour Town several times.....It is my favorite course. Just a fantastic layout. You really have to be creative to play it. If you're staying at Sea Pines they are currently offering rates at $190 to play it. I believe Heron Point is $110. It's a pretty good course as well. They actually went in last year and eased it up a bit. The Ocean Course is closed for renovation.

I played Hilton Head National on 5/30......It's a great course just off the island. It was $65.

The courses at Palmetto Dunes are pretty good too. RTJ is my favorite there.

Most of the area courses punched their greens on or around June 1st......They should be back in good shape by July.

I played Oakmont a few years ago. At least it's not "tricked" up like many of the US Open courses. It's a great traditional early American golf course.....It is hard as hell though.

They basically make only two changes for the US Open.

-Grow up the rough.......It's ridiculous but at least they do have 2 cuts before the primary which is basically a wedge out.

-Slow down the greens........That's a bit of a urban myth but it is true to some extent. Oakmont hosts a couple of Member events every year in which the greens are faster than they are during the US Open. During regular member play, they are just basic lightning fast!!

Bombers do have an advantage but a few shorter hitters have hung around in the past......But if one of the long hitters gets hot with the driver and putts reasonably well, they could run away with it.

Today on Golf Channel they actually said if it stays dry, someone may drive the 1st hole.....It's 482 yards!!!!! But the last 120 yards is straight down hill. They also said that do to the removal of the trees , we may see some unusual angles played by players.

I don't think it's the hardest course in America but it's definitely in the top 5. I personally think The Ocean Course is the hardest course but I played it in the wind and it was not fun.
