I don't believe the game has passed him by. I believe he was never in front of it.

You are correct that his recruiting has gone off a cliff. The staff has gotten lazy and has relied way too much on non qualifiers. That has not worked as too many of those have either not shown up or not stayed. We simply just don't have much talent on this team, which is why injuries to a few good players has led to playing guys who are marginal FBS talent.
