The flag is coming down. So, why create more division. Why give a black man a holiday specifically because he was black and a leader for blacks? We are a melting pot so one race should not be given a holiday. What about the hispanics? Asians? American Indian? Muslims? And, yes the whites.

The man himself said this:

" I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

That day is here my friends. No need to have a black holiday.

He further said:
"I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers."

---------

Well that day is hear my friends. I have proof of it. I live it and see it.

Let's change Martin Luther King Day to American Freedom Day. That includes all peoples.

Women still think we need it so we'll have it. That's what all this is. Women feeling sorry for people. They started this whole thing. My sister used to feel sorry for the lions on TV when they got shot and killed for charging at the people. She thought they should just let the lions eat everybody.

That's how women are. As long as they're in charge, this is what you're going to get. That one on there last night squawking about the flag on the NBC Nightly News. A loud old hag, but still a woman. Still thinks lions should just eat us all.

I just browsed my online sites, and saw a story out of Charleston, WV, where an individual is raising hell over the name of Stonewall Jackson Middle School, and demands the name be changed immediately. I didn't see a picture of the person lodging the complaint, but I'm guessing they look nothing like myself. I just don't see WVians caving into this madness.

It is a woman, so I do hope that you look nothing like her.

He meant she's black. And she is.

This whole thing makes me want to go fishing at Stonewall Jackson Lake. Not only do they have the best bass fishing in the state, but now it's redneck pride just to be there because of the name. Don't even have to fish. I could just drive up there, wear a sheet and dance in the parking lot with some pickin' and grinnin' on the radio.

You would probably get hit on by a gay racist redneck.

Yeah, probably. Hell, my head's in the clouds as much as the liberals a lot of times. These stupid thoughts of this utopian hick place where everybody's proud to be backward cheapskates. It doesn't exist. If it did, I'd have never left it.

You're right. Even if it wasn't queers, it would still be idiots. That's really even worse. I used to fish up there and when I reeled one in some moron would walk up and say, "It ain't no good since you can't keep it." If that's what makes it good, I might as well just go to Long John Silver's.

How miserable does your life have to be to worry about the name of a building. I couldn't imagine being constantly bitter.

Without bitterness though, life seems extremely dull. Fear, anger and bitterness drove me to accomplish things in life. Being happy or content is kind of scary. What do you do then, just sit and wait? On what?

I think you have to find stuff to be pissed off about or you might as well just go to Chapman's and arrange the funeral now.

I'm not the one worrying about the name of the building, moron. Rather, I'm bitching about those politically correct morons that worry about the names of buildings, bridges, roads, and metal works of art.

I was talking about the lady that IS complaining not you.

The ignorant woman complaining about the name Stonewall Jackson should check him out. If she could instill his attitude, work habits, overcoming difficulty in those kids going through the school, the West Side could Overcome.

Yeah, I'm with herdman on this one. If he had lobbied for this over the last two years, I would have fought him tooth-and-nail over it.

Working at an HBCU, MLK day was like a week long Christmas celebration. Work duties came secondary to drinking forties, smoking blunts, dancing the dougie, and just doing other hoodrat things with my friends.

But, now that I can't take advantage of that week, we should probably just put all marginalized groups into one day of celebration and get back to trying to avoid them the other 364 days.

This is sarcasm (I think, ?maybe not?), but I'd seriously love to hear your take on the HBCU culture and your experience.

My wife did non-profit law (mostly poverty landlord/tenant and family stuff) and subsequently was a program manager for an inner-city non-profit dealing with secondary and higher education, sometimes working with HBCUs in the south. In some ways it made me more sympathetic to some black issues, but in other ways it frustrated her/us and made me less sympathetic. I do specifically remember her saying that some of the HBCU administrators (she mentioned it being more prevalent there) "inflating" some credentials like demanding to be called "doctor" when they had an honorary doctorate or even a JD.

I have experience with HBCU's. Honestly, most of them are really well ran and full of nice folks. Ran much better than Marshall is. Honestly, that is the truth.

I don't recall her having complaints about how they were run, just a few comments she had made about some administrators she dealt with.

Her main complaint was with these sham for profit "universities" that prey on inner city youth and get them to take out thousands in loans for worthless degrees. She would always try to steer them to a real school that had grant programs (HBCU or otherwise) rather than some terrible sham for profit place.

you are out of your mother fvcking mind.

HBCUs are plagued by corruption, in-fighting, and scandal.

look at the top ranked HBCUs in the country: howard, hampton, florida A&M . . . then some of the other more well-known HBCUs: alabama state, south carolina state, cookman. all of those have had major issues of some sort over the last couple of years.

howard had tons of money unaccounted for and then had an unanimous vote of no-confidence in their president. howard has had the best reputation of all HBCUs, yet they couldnt dodge the plague of scandals at HBCUs.

hampton had a professor sending drugs to inmates a few years ago. a dean banned male students from wearing cornrows and dreads- are you kidding me?

florida A&M had major issues with their athletic department this year, last year, and then the band death.

alabama state is an absolute mess. for a person to become president of the university, they have to be nominated in by a board of trustees member. their current president received a nomination. within months after being sworn in as the president, the board of trustee who nominated her took out a full-page ad in the local paper apologizing for his error. he claimed that the president was unfit, lied on her resume, and was already crushing the school just months into her tenure. the president then allegedly collaborated with others to force certain members of the board of trustees out, which involved the governor of alabama. the board has been fighting for years. their sports are under major sanctions and the NCAA just alerted them that three teams, including their football program, is under investigation for new violations. their former head football coach is in the middle of a lawsuit against the school right now. one of their thirteen board of trustee members sent me two pictures of his junk last week. there is a ton more going on with that school.

south carolina state is in a huge mess with tons of missing money. the state senate has repeatedly asked for them to open their books. the school refused. the senate than voted to shut down everything for a 12 year period; closing all doors to everything to sort out the scandal. nobody knows if that place will be open in six months.

cookman? do we even need to go there? such a small school, yet three shootings on campus in the last six months . . . at least three more off-campus involving students in the at same period. financial difficulties are so bad there that vendors have refused to do anymore business with them. the new president issued an email telling all faculty and staff that they were under a spending freeze. there would be no payments signed or money sent to vendors for new work until the new fiscal year (three months prior to that new date). the school is under NCAA investigation. they lost an $800,000 lawsuit to a former football coach a few years ago. the new president went public last year talking about how losing and having to fight against so many lawsuits from former employees has crippled them, and that they need to do a better job with their employees. of course, it was rumored that this new president came in and spent $150,000 on his week long inauguration celebration, so take that for what it is worth.

morris brown college, one of the top for HBCUs at one time, closed. within weeks, it went from a regular college to shutting its doors.

HBCUs have had a huge disproportionate number of scandals compared with all universities. as a whole, they are extremely poorly managed with tons of issues. now, that doesnt mean all of them. schools like tennessee state continue to grow and do well. but, overall, HBCUs are an absolute mess for many reasons.

carl, in response to your question, my views on the HBCUs i am familiar with are that they are a smoke-and-mirrors operation full of laziness, ineptitude, disorganization, and lack of accountability. i could go into shocking detail of stories that happened at cookman. on an almost daily basis i would come home shocked at things that went on there. sometimes, it was on purpose. other times, it was the result of employees being lazy and not being held accountable. other times, it was because people had positions they were far, far unqualified and too dumb to be in. again, that doesnt mean every single person associated with that school was like that. as long as nobody complained and everybody kept doing (passing every student regardless if they could spell their own name) what needed to be done in order to secure the money (from both student tuition and state assistance), things would be alright. but, god forbid anyone step out of line and try to do things the right way.

I do recall her saying this and getting frustrated by it. I can't say it was limited to HBCU's though (more so across the spectrum of the secondary/higher ed partners). She said a lot of talk, puffery, and conferences, but never any feet to the pavement action/work on a lot of things. A lot of lecturing and motivational speaking, but not a lot of doing.

Like you say, there were a lot of good people in some of these positions, but a lot of do-nothing but sound/talk good leaders/administrators that she were frustrating to work with. It goes on everywhere, but a lot of talk and "good intentions" to secure grant money, but no actual plan or follow through for execution.
