Week One Depth Chart

Things that jump out to me:

* Shane Simmons at starting DE.
* Rasheen Ali at starting RB.
* Mollette at Center and Salguero at Guard.
* Sartor at starting RT over Tucker.
* LeAnthony WIlliams at starting CB.
* Cory McCory at starting Nickel.
* Andrew Sanders at starting PK and KO.

Things that jump out to me:

* Shane Simmons at starting DE.
Could be a couple things here. One, he plays the option better, and two, he's from just down the road from the Naval Academy (Laurel, Md), so perhaps he has an added oomph this weekend playing close to home.

To clarify for some: Oomph means excited, energetic, or sexually attractive. I'm using it as energetic.

Ahmed possibly starting over Willie Johnson is a surprise to me... Also Sanders being the field goal kicker, and Ali ahead of Evans.
Ciucci wasn't that great last year. No pop on the ball and no distance. Eager to see what this kid can do. We need a solid, reliable FG guy.

When I found out we were 3 point favorites against Navy, I thought they were under-estimating Navy. Looking at the two-deep, I think they are over-estimating Marshall.

Take Navy and the points.

Totally agree... One of the offseason priorities I pointed out was the need to have a FG kicker that could make a 40-yard kick consistently and even stretch it to 45+ in good conditions.

Johnson is fast, but not the most reliable hands.
That is true, but I thought the fact that Willie is a 6th year senior might give him the benefit of the doubt if the two are even or close to it.

We needed some changes, guess we will find out in a few days if the right ones were made.

Wow so they are screwing up the ol . Tucker is better and moving mollette to center is a head scratcher as well

It really isn't a surprise at all. Willie has speed to burn, but he has been a below average player. Outside of the one bomb he'll catch every couple games he hasn't done anything.

In 49 games over 5 seasons he has a total of 82 catches for 1,221 yards and 10 TDs. His career totals are what most top WRs have in a single season. Even an average WR can get 1/2 to 3/4 that production in one season. It's taken Willie 49 games to accumulate that.

His career per game average is 1.67 rpg and 24.92 ypg. He averages 2 TDs a season. It's a wonder he hasn't been passed up on the depth chart and faded out.

I don't know why he isn't used more in the KR game to take advantage of his speed.

When an earlier projected depth chart was posted, I did mention to keep an eye on Shane Simmons. I think the only thing going on here is that the dude can play. I don't think this is a negative comment on any of the other DEs, just that Simmons is pretty good.

In his defense, he didn't really fit into our "Four Tight-Ends" offensive philosophy.

I agree with you on the kick returns, he must have bricks for hands.

Tucker has been an enigma ever since he got here. Great frame, great kid. Just something missing. It wouldn't have been a surprise to see him as a starter, but I'm also not too surprised to see Sartor get the nod as his trajectory has been steep the past couple years.

As for switching Sal and Mollette, again, not too surprising. I actually thought Mollette would get the Center position after Brown left. Mollette is the better lineman of the two and snapping/blocking is more difficult than just blocking. This move puts Mollette in a comfortable position and maybe makes Sal a better OL.

Just my thoughts.

I like Willie and I wish he would just explode this year, but I don't see it. And the thing is if he has 25 catches for 500 yards and 3 TDs it would be an explosion.

Willie Johnson tells us two things.

1) Our WR corp has largely sucked over the last 5 seasons because no one has supplanted him.

2) Our previous staff really didn't have a clue how to utilize the talent on the field.

There is a solid argument for option two given how much more Xavier Gaines could be used given that he can play QB, RB, TE, and all five WR positions. Then there's Chris Jackson. Mr. PI himself. No sane person saw a draft pick in his future much less starting and having a pro career. Or there's Moo Moo Smith. All 5'6" of that dude was sent deep for fades and 50/50 balls. Hardly ever using him on crosses, drags, end arounds, and other speed underneath routes like he ran at PSU. Nope. Go out there and do the job of a 6'6" WR all the while being lined up outside the numbers and almost on the sideline.

thanks for the insight, I guess we will see how good a move this is on Saturday.

This paragraph is so true it makes my stomach cramp. For a staff that was all about supposedly playing to our strengths, the creativity just wasn't ever there. We'd line Gaines up in Wildcat with Wells still in the game and out on the boundary, so you're playing 9-on-11 with the defense already knowing you're going to run the ball.

Or when we got behind in games at the end of the season and the staff did finally take pity on Wells and pull him, we'd put in Gaines and run play action every down, so the only question was really which carrier would take the ball, Gaines or Knox, and we were lucky just to get back to the line.

We would do things offensively that would seem to intentionally make us one dimensional. It wasn't ever as bad as Mark Snyder sending Cody Slate out there to play wildcat and throw a football like a javelin to the other team, but there was a lot I saw the last ten years that made absolutely no sense to me.

I thought Owen Porter would become a starter this year. Hope he gets to play a lot. He plays with such energy and enthusiasm. I agree with some of the above posts that these decisions by the coaching staff will either prove to be spot on or we will see different starters the next game. At this point, we have to rely on Huff to have evaluated the talent and made the choices he thinks will win for him. Go Herd.

I think a lot of DL are going to play Saturday. The ones that play the best will play the most. I don’t think there’s too much to read this particular week about being a 1 or 2, especially on the ends.

Just do your job and you’ll be there. Simple philosophy

I was looking for Knowledge McDaniel to carry a big load of the ground game.

Is Sartor on scholarship yet? Seems like he was a 3rd year walk on, I'm rooting for him plus anyone that sticks it out as a 2-3 year walk on. Could this be his 1st road game besides traveling with the team for bowl games?

I think he still probably will... In the college game you are going to have a running back get banged up at some point pretty much every year. You need three guys ready to step in and tote it. We have that in Ali, Evans and McDaniel... Now if we go past that on the depth chart we may have some issues with Papillon being out.

I think he will end up as the #2 behind Ali. I know Evans is a leader on the team, but he just isn't all that explosive. Unless something changed this off season I don't know how he stays as the #1 or even #1a.

We desperately need a homerun hitter back there. Since Tyler King left we have not had a back that can make one cut and be gone taking it 60+ to the house. Knox was awesome, but that wasn't his game and a Butler type to pair with him would have help our offense out so much. Hopefully Ali or McDaniel will be that guy this year.

Ali certainly looked impressive in the spring game. He has the size to break tackles as well.
