Welp. This puts a new light on our final play

Yeah both are true. Still a bad pass
Nope. If Ahmed doesn't get his head taken off he's exactly where that ball was going to be.

He may not catch it(as he had drops all night), but it doesn't go right to the defender.

It was a dirty play and that defender should have been tossed.

so is the defender

Because we had no player there. That defender doesn't have that clean INT if Ahmed us able to finish his route. Ahmed might not have caught it as he had the drops, but he's in the way. Grant just didn't throw the ball directly to the LB.
I don't think we should bench Wells.

if Ahmed doesn’t have his head taken off the safety still makes a play on the ball to at least break it up if not pick it off.

why? Because wells is looking at that location from before snap until he delivers the pass. He stared down the receiver… as usual and made a bad pass. It’s a foul as well

zaban is clearly number 2 or with Grants interceptions he would be playing.

Safety makes a play on the receiver….as all DBs do. The ball was where the receiver was going to be.
How an official doesn’t make that call is beyond me.

Having physical skills, which Grant has, is not enough to win games at the college level. He has not shown that he has the ability/willingness to stand in the pocket and look for open receivers. He throws into coverage too often. He is an average QB, and at times has thrown the ball well, but has not shown that he can outplay teams with good defenses. A good kid, for sure. Don't know about Zban, but he has looked pretty good in the limited time he has been on the field. Might be worth a shot to give him more reps.

You don't, but a bunch of our fans do. All I kept hearing all game was "Put Zban in" and people talking about the arrival of Cole Pennington.
Define “a bunch”.

Maybe a few drunk uncles who sit around you yell it the whole game because they’re drunk morons? I haven’t heard Zban or Pennington’s name a single time all year in my section, my tailgate, in the common areas, while walking to the stadium, etc.

Please don’t create a narrative that doesn’t exist because of a few people who sit around you. Zban blows & 95% of our fans know it.

That's what worries me. We have Wells and we don't have a real viable back up. How did we get so thin at QB? Not trying to pick on anyone but just think if Wells had to sit out a game or even half. Do we even have a fighting chance? We are late in the season, there is enough history out there and film now. You know what teams are going to do? Stuff Ali, or attempt to, and make Wells and the passing game beat them.

Well is the starter. We still have a chance at the division, but we know what is coming. Charlotte is going to stuff the box and take away the run, if they can.

Because the last coach completely neglected the most important position in all of sports for the last half decade.

That's crazy, the qb position is what makes a football team go. I can't believe our situation at qb. I bet it is one of the worst depth charts in FBS football.

It’s been that way for a while. Nobody behind Litton, nobody behind Green, nobody behind Wells.

One of my biggest complaints about Doc is even with big leads he never gave the backup snaps, nor did he ever make a change no matter how bad the starter was performing (think Isaiah Green...).

This was only one of many pass plays where UAB knocked receivers off routes. It’s obvious they are coached to do it. They don’t hold, they just hit of push enough to throw off the timing and do it downfield. They must have figured out cusa refs don’t call illegal contact unless it’s an obvious hold or sustained contact.

That’s just good coaching. It’s only a penalty if the refs call it.

Still looking for the penalty. In college football it isn't a penalty to hit a receiver downfield. There are two defensive penalties that usually apply: Defensive Holding (before the ball is in the air) and Pass Interference (after the ball is in the air). It definitely isn't Holding and it can't be Interference until the ball is in the air. It's close, and I guess you could argue that the defender is still making the very end of his contact at the very beginning of Wells' throw, but even in slow motion that's tough to sell. Again, I don't think there was a penalty here.

vast majority of the time that is never going to be called.

I tend to agree with you. The only possibility would be illegal contact, and even this angle doesn’t show hands directly on the head even though his head moves. The ref can’t call it if he didn’t directly see it. https://sportsfanfocus.com/pass-interference-vs-holding-illegal-contact/

One of the better analyses of an opposing team’s strategy I have read on here. ? - how do you, if you are the Herd WR’s coach, instruct your guys on how to overcome this tactic?
